The LSUS Pilots and Lady Pilots got to have a couple of home matches over the past weekend.  Both teams played a doubleheader last Thursday against the University of Houston – Victoria and Huston Tillotson on Saturday at the Swamp.  

For the men’s soccer team,  the matches were against two of the top five teams in the RRAC.   University of Houston – Victoria came in with a 5-1-1 overall record and 2-0 in RRAC Conference play.    Huston-Tillotson carried a 5-1-1 record and also 2-0-1 in the RRAC.   

For the women’s soccer team, Huston-Tillotson came to town winning their last two games and 3-2 overall record and 2-1 RRAC record.   University of Houston-Victoria reached The Swamp losing 2 out of the last 3 matches and a 5-3 overall record and 1-1 RRAC record.  

Men’s Soccer

University of Houston-Victoria 4, LSUS 3 (2 OT)

The Jaguars came out hard and fast against the Pilots.  Shots came quickly by Martin Markovic and Irankunda Bosco.   LSUS was the victim of the offsides flag early.  In the 16th minute, the Pilots struck gold with a goal from Maurice Theart who nailed his third goal of the season.   Guilherme Pereira was credited with the assist.  The Pilots struck once again two minutes later as Martin Rassmussen for his first goal of the season.   Jaguars took control on their third of the pitch with shots by Bosco and Danny Nunez.   Pilot goalkeeper Louis Owens was charged with a yellow card.  The backline defense of the Pilots held strong as the Jaguars forced back to back corners.   UHV’s Gifanho Lubaki was charged with a yellow card.   Gledi Doda broke away in the 21st minute and pushed the Pilots up 3-0 with his second goal of the season.   Maurice Theart was given the assist.   Both teams brought in various substitutions to either maintain the Pilots lead or change up the massive lead for the Jaguars.  The referees kept the shot count low as the Jaguars got the only shot in the remaining half.   Since the third goal,  LSUS was charged with 8 fouls and UHV was charged with 5 fouls.   The Jaguars slightly outshot LSUS 6-4, but the Pilots took a massive 3-0 lead into halftime.  

Jaguars once again came out fast getting close with a crossbar shot from Karlo Lopez and a high shot by Jose Martinez.   LSUS had to go down to ten men in the 51st minute with a red card charged to Aaron Ibe.  UHV went aggressive as the Pilots went on the defense of their lead.   UHV was charged with six fouls.  The Jaguars kept the ball on their pitch forcing a second corner kick in the first fifteen minutes of the second half.   The fouls continued to increase for the Jaguars.  UHV accumulated 11 fouls in the first twenty minutes.   Nunez took a shot that was saved by Owens in the 64th minute.   The shorthanded Pilots were charged with a yellow card by Arsenios Dimitrious.    The Pilots had to be careful not to lose another player as Owens and Dimitrious both had a yellow.   UHV started to hammer the shots with five and two saved by Owens in the next eight minutes.   LSUS pushed subs to put fresh legs to maintain their lead.   Another yellow card came to the Pilots in the 78th minute to Adam Gonzales.   UHV finally scored with a goal from Mateo Canales in the 78th minute.  LSUS was looking to escape with the win until the closing minutes of the second half.   The Jaguar’s Bosco popped the net in the 87th minute to close the gap to 3-2.    With 24 seconds in the second-half regulation, Adrian Rodriguez got his first goal of the season for the Jaguars at the right time.  UHV had tied the game 3-3 and headed into overtime.    UHV did not allow the short-handed PIlots a single shot to their 13.  The possession control was handled by the Jaguars.

The first overtime saw the two teams each take two shots.  LSUS once again got a yellow card by Matt Roberts.  The Pilots got an on-target shot from Abdoul Karim Pare and a wide shot from James Averies.  

The second overtime saw the start with a shot by Pare for LSUS that was blocked.   The Jaguars finally finished the comeback in the 103rd minute with a goal by Mwamba Moiondani and an assist by Karlo Lopez. 

Houston Victoria had outshot LSUS 22-7 in the comeback win.   Fouls were abundant as UHV had 21 to the Pilot’s 18.  

LSUS 3, Huston-Tillotson 0

The teams came out evenly in the first fifteen minutes as each team took a couple of shots.  Each team was charged with a yellow card as LSUS’s Adam Gonzales was charged.  LSUS started to find the target in the next fifteen.   Liam Vivian and Scott Neil shot had to be saved by Ram’s goalkeeper Matthew Kingwell.  The first goal came in the 30th minute when Abdoul Karim Pare scored his fifth goal of the season with an assist by Adam Gonzales.  Thirty seconds later, LSUS added another goal from Maurice Theart to take the 2-0 lead.   In the 32nd minute, the Pilots made it three for three on shots with a goal by Julius Williams and an assist by Hugo Juliao.  LSUS took four more opportunities in the remainder of the half.    LSUS outshot UHT 12-4 and took a 3-0 lead once again into the second half.  

The Rams looked to close the lead and took to their third with back-to-back corners in the first fifteen.   LSUS got another yellow card credited to Matt Roberts.  LSUS made sure that the same thing didn’t happen again for the second time on the weekend.  Numerous subs came in for LSUS and also to keep fresh legs.  Shots were few in the second half. Jommar Reyes and Juan Belman, who took 2 shots, were the remaining shots from the Rams.   LSUS Louis Owens kept the clean sheet for the win.  

Women’s Soccer

LSUS 1, University of Houston-Victoria 0

The Lady Jaguars came out of the gate with shooting three shots by Estelle Flanagan around the goal.  Flanagan last shot hit the post.  LSUS got back control of the ball and shots by Victoria Davis and Kirsten Nolan we’re on target and had to be saved.  The Lady Pilots got three opportunities for corners.  Flanagan got another opportunity for UHV and the fourth time had won’t be saved.  Nolan had another on-target shot that had to be saved.  The Lady Pilots kept getting close with an Alyssa Castillo shot that had to be saved.  Houston-Victoria slightly outshot the Lady Pilots 10-9.   Jaguars goalkeeper Emile Ulke had to make four saves.  Pilots goalkeeper Carlota Alcade only had to make one save.  The two teams were scoreless after the first half.  

The Pilots came out firing.  Nolan’s shot was blocked and Chelsea Brown’s shot went high.  UHV received a yellow card from Nisa Ollivierre.  Flannigan had to have another shot saved by Alcalde.   LSUS was awarded a penalty kick off a Jaguar foul.  Kirsten Nolan nailed the penalty kick to give LSUS the  1-0 lead in the 62nd minute.  The Lady Pilot shut down the shot opportunities with their defense.  Only two more shots were taken by the Lady Jaguars as Flannagan and Morgan Espinosa’s shots were saved by Alcalde.  The Lady Pilots held on for the 1-0 win.

Carlotta Alcalde kept the clean sheet with 4 saves.  Kirsten Nolan got off 6 shots with 3 on target.  LSUS and UHV each had 14 shots total. 

Huston-Tilloston 1, LSUS 0

The Lady Pilots goalkeeper Carlotta Alcalde was challenged early in the match with a shot on target from America Macias.  Pilot Chelsea Brown took her opportunity with a shot that required a save from the Lady Rams.  The Lady Pilots fell victim to the offside flag with three straight offside calls.  Messly Navarro took a shot that needed a save from Alcalde.  Alcalde had to stop shots from Lesly Davila, Samantha Boden, and Keila Olivia.   Ryleigh Smith tried to score for the Lady Pilots but the shot was saved.   The Lady Rams outshot LSUS 5-3 in the first half with the two remaining scoreless.  

The Lady Rams took chances from Davila and Mecias to break the tie.  Samantha Bodden was finally successful in the 55th minute for Huston-Tilloston.  Abbie Rutledge and a corner attempted to catch the Lady Rams.  In the 62nd minute, both teams dropped to 10 women each as LSUS’s Dawniella Torres and Huston-Tilloston’s Keila Oliva each received a red card.  Melissa Navarro fired off three shots that required the attention of Alcalde.  Shots by Gabriella Roa and Ryleigh Smith were unable to bring the Lady Pilots back in the match.  

Huston-Tilloston outshot the Lady Pilots 13-8 for the evening.  Chelsea Brown, Gabriella Roa, and Ryleigh Smith all had two shots for the match.  Carlotta Alcalde had 9 saves for the match. 

The Pilots and Lady Pilots will face two Louisiana teams this upcoming weekend.  Thursday both teams will travel to Alexandria to face LSU-A.  LSUS will face Louisiana College at The Swamp on Saturday.  Women will play at 1 pm.  The men’s team will follow at 3:30.  

Player of the Week Honors

Maurice Theart was recognized as the RRAC Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for Sept 27-Oct 3.   Theart had a goal and an assist in the 4-3 2OT win over University of Houston-Victoria.  

James Averies and Theart were nominated for Spet 20-26 honors.  

The Lady Pilots have had several players nominated for the award in the past couple of weeks.  Kirsten Nolan and Livia Schneider were nominated for the Sept 20-26.  Nolan was once again nominated for Sept 27-Oct 3 along with goalkeeper Carlot Alcalde.
