Three teams survived week two of the playoffs from District 1-A.   Three of the teams had home games while the road teams were sent preparing for next year.   Big nights for Haynesville, Homer, and Calvary as they advanced to the next round.  Here is a recap of the second week of playoffs

Class 1A Second Round

No. 6 Haynesville 48, No. 11 Lincoln Prep 13

One of the two district’s rivals was going to say “Au Revoir” to their football season in the second-round matchup.  Lincoln Prep had been getting hot late in the season, but their second trip to Red Franklin Memorial Stadium finished like the first with a big win for the Tors.   

Toby Franklin showed out in front of the home crown with 162 yards rushing and four touchdowns.  Alonzo Jackson also added two touchdowns for the Tors with a fumble recovery return and crashing in on a rush.  

Dmitry Payne had another special teams touchdown for the Panthers with a late 74-yard touchdown kick-off return.  Ta’rell Simmons scored on a 52 yard run in the first half.  Emmanuel Bryant was a beast on defense with 13 tackles.

Toby Franklin’s first score in the first quarter was the only score of the quarter.  Franklin crashed into the end zone on a 2-yard run.  The Tors missed on the extra point and took an early 2-0 lead.   

Haynesville (7-4) broke loose with a big second quarter.  Three minutes into the second period, Alonzo Jackson took a fumble recovery to the 45 yards to the house.  Franklin added to the Tors side of the scoreboard with a 32-yard run to push Haynesville’s lead to 20-0.   Lincoln Prep came back just  14 seconds later as Ta’rell Simmons took the option play for a touchdown and got the Panthers away from a shutout.  Franklin brought the momentum back Haynesville’s way on a 64 yard run within the next thirty seconds.  The scoring frenzy stopped for the half as the Tors took a 28-6 lead into the locker room.  

Franklin grabbed his fourth touchdown of the game with a little under nine minutes remaining in the third quarter.  Alonzo Jackson struck one more time on a 3-yard run to push the lead to 41-6 heading into the final quarter.  

Freshman Keizavion Woods added to the Tors total in the fourth with a 12-yard run.  Dmitry Payne ended the game in the final seconds with his sixth kick-off return touchdown on a 68-yard kickoff return to leave one last Panther memory of this season.   

Haynesville will travel to No. 3 Grand Lake (10-1) in Lake Charles area next Friday night.

No. 2 Homer 46, No. 15 Northwood-Lena 6

The Homer Pelican (9-2) make their third consecutive trip to the quarterfinals in Class A.  The Pels rolled into the next round on big plays from Andrevious Buggs and Elyjay Curry.   Takeviuante Kidd had success passing two touchdowns in pushing the Pels.  The Pelican struck fast in the first quarter and never looked back at the Gators.  

Andrevious Buggs kicked of the Pels scoring with a 50-yard run to give the early lead.   Takeviuante Kidd struck next with a touchdown pass to Gregory Williams.   Homer lost possession on a fumble and the Gators closed the gap to 14-6 still in the first quarter.   The Pelican made Northwood-Lena pay for getting too close.  Elyjay Curry broke past the Gators on a 56-yard run to widen the Homer lead.   Homer’s defense stepped up as Telkeldrick Webb took a blocked punt back to the end zone with 32 seconds remaining in the first.  Homer had a 27-6 lead heading into the second quarter.  

Homer took over after a failed fourth-down conversion by the Gator.  Kidd took the air attack down the field from their own 42.  Kidd struck Webb to carry down to the Gators 45.   Kidd’s next pass for 18 yards to Jamarquese Hampton closed in for the Pelicans.  A 27-yard pass to Devante Champ struck gold for the Pelicans as they increased their lead to 33-6 in the third quarter.    Homer put up two more scores in the second half for the win. 

For the second consecutive year, the road for the quarterfinals will run through White Castle for the Pelicans.  Homer will travel south of Baton Rouge on Highway 1 to Iberville Parish to face the No. 10 White Castle Bulldogs. (5-5).  They upset LaSalle (7-4) 41-40 on Friday night.  Homer beat White Castle 16-13 last year.  The Bulldogs are currently on a 5-game winning streak. 

No. 1 Logansport 50,  No. 16 Arcadia 0

Division IV

No. 4 Calvary 63, No. 5 Sacred Heart 7

The Cavaliers closed out their homestand at Jerry Barker Stadium with a massive blowout of Ville Platte-based Sacred Heart.  Louisiana Tech commit Landry Lyddy finished his last Cavalier homestand with a four-touchdown passing night for 371 yards.  Xavier “Tutt” McGlothen caught 4 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown.  Aubrey Hermes also reached the 100-yard level with 4 receptions for 109 yards and a touchdown.  John Simon IV and Kolby Thomas also reached the end zone on receptions.  Walter Williams took the attack on the ground scoring twice for the Cavaliers. Lyddy and Miles Williams also had rushing touchdowns.  Denham Smith kept the defense rolling into the backfield with 6 tackles (4 solo, 2 assist) including 3 sacks.  Tahj Simeneaux snatched two interceptions including a pick six and gave the defense credit for points on the board.   Hutch Grace, Landon Sylvie, and  Landon Mayeaux all grabbed an interceptions

Calvary will be facing a rematch of the Division IV championship from last year as they will have to travel to undefeated No. 1 seed Ouachita Christian (12-0) for a semifinal matchup.
