LHSAA Softball Quarterfinals Results and Five Local Teams Heading To State Tournament - Under The Radar - NW Louisiana

Well, we said it might happen last weekend, and lo and behold, it did.  We have an all-Northwest Louisiana Division V Non-Select Semi-Finals.  It took an 8-7 upset by No. 9 Choudrant over No. 1 Holden, a road win by the Florien Lady Black Cats, and the Converse Lady Wildcats and Quitman Lady Wolverines taking care of business at home.  The four teams will square off at the Ochsner LHSAA Softball State Softball Tournament in Sulphur this coming weekend.

Choudrant Lady Aggies took an early lead and then had to hold off the No. 1 seed to the full 7 innings.  Faith Milton crushed one out of the park to help secure the win for Choudrant and a trip to Sulphur.  It’s been 12 long years since the Lady Aggies have graced the State Tournament.  In fact, this was when the tournament included teams in the quarterfinals.  Choudrant has not won a state title since 2010.

The Lady Black Cats took a while to get started but eventually pushed their way past Hicks on the road.   Grace Brooks went 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs to help Florien.  Sarah McDaniels 8 strikeouts also put a dent in the Lady Pirates’ plans for a trip to Sulphur.   Florien will be making its third consecutive trip to Sulphur.

Rayni Rivers had another stellar performance going 2 for 3 with a double and RBI.  On the mound, Avery Prine had the most strikeouts of any local team as she struckout ten for Converse.  This is Converse’s first trip back to the state tournament since 2017.

Quitman’s Karley Huckaby hit a walk-off three run smash over the left field to push the Lady Wolverines into a 10-run rule in six innings over the Stanley Lady Panthers.   Cali Deal had 8 strikeouts and gave up only two hits for the win.

Also joining the four Division V schools will be the Calvary Lady Cavaliers looking for a “3-peat” at a State Championship.  Sulphur is a home away from home for the Lady Cavaliers.  This is the ninth consecutive trip to Sulphur.  Coach Tiffany Wood said about the streak, “Every trip to Sulphur is exciting, different, and special!” Wood said. “Being able to practice this time of year is an honor! Our first group in 2014 set the goal and achieved it, every team after that has bought it and made it a mission to achieve the same goal of being at the State Tournament!! This 2023 Calvary team 19 is a special group of girls working hard to bring home another State Title!”.

Calvary took care of business on the road run-ruling Holy Savior Menard in Alexandria.  Tavia Leadon went 4 for 4 with a double and home run and 3 RBIs to give Calvary the win.  Homers from Mallory Carver and DJ Lynch helped the Lady Cavs get to Sulphur again. Carlie Guile also went 3 for 4 with a triple.    Kynzee Anderson tossed 8 strikeouts for the win.
