Playoffs kicked off last week and we had some interesting first-round games.    The top story in Simsboro.  Doyline ace pitcher Noah Spears threw a 7-inning perfect game with 18 strikeouts as the Panther eliminated the Simsboro Tigers last week.  The prize for the Panthers is a trip back to Lincoln Parish to face No. 1 Choudrant.

Division III Select and Non-Select started the new format of Best of 3 series throughout the playoffs including the first round.   Many took care of Jewel Sumner 2-0 with some low-scoring matchups.  Some top-hitting performances from Lathan Lee and Payton Hyden pushed the Tigers into the second round.  Also, some star pitching from Tuffy Cutrer helped eliminate the Cowboys.   Loyola and Red River both started strong, stealing Game 1 in each of its series, but Pine and Isidore Newman fired back and forced a game three eliminating both teams.   The Bulldogs added four to the Next 10 list and Tyler Hughes was the only double-dipper on both the hitting and pitching list for the first round.   Despite losing their series, the Flyers’ Gray Deason had a top performance going 5 for 8 with a double and home run and gaining 3 RBIs.   Murphy Tamplin also put in a strong 4 for 5 performance for the Flyers.

In Division IV Select, St. Mary’s run-ruled St. Edmond behind a powerful pitching performance from Ethan Busby.

In Division V,  Calvin would not go away easily as it took 14 innings to eliminate them from the playoffs.  Holden and Calvin remained tied until the 13th inning at 2-2.  Calvin had a bad 14th inning with four errors and four walks allowing the Rockets to score 8 runs.   The deficit was too much to overcome for the Cougars.   Stanley piled on the 7 runs in the third inning and kept the ten-run lead until the fifth inning to knock out Saline.  Castor traveled to Bell City and was shut out by the Bruins.
