The last time the Homer Pelicans had reached the State semifinals of the LHSAA playoffs Ronald Reagan was the president of the United States.  Madonna was still a “Material Girl” and Prince’s girl was wearing a “Raspberry Beret” and we all sang along to “We Are The World” by USA for AFRICA.  The Homer Pelicans reached the state championship in 1985 and fell to the Springhill Lumberjacks in the Class 2A state championship.  LHSAA still went as high as Class 4A.  No split between private and schools existed.

Well now in the world of Juice Wrld and Marshmello along with Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion, the Homer Pelicans have reached that pinnacle again with an 18-13 win over White Castle Bulldogs on Friday night.  The Pelicans had to travel almost four hours to Iberville Parish to accomplish the feat.

The defensive prowess of Tamarean Grant with his 8.5 tackles (8 solo, 1 assist) and Armiund Chatman 5.0 tackles (4 solo, 2 assist) kept last year’s state runner up in check.   A key interception by Telkeldrick Webb near the White Castle end zone helped seal the game.

On the offense, Jaylon Calome darted for 88 yards and a touchdown.  Takevieuntae Kidd used the quarterback option to carry in a touchdown for the Pels.  On special teams, Brendon Harris took advantage of a bad snap on a punt deep in Bulldog territory and recovered the ball for a touchdown.

The win sends Homer on the road once again and they will have a tall order in facing the defending state champs and No. 1 seeded Oak Grove Tigers.  The Tigers have made at least the semifinals since 2015.

The Pelicans have been one of the surprise teams in this year and stayed under the radar for the playoffs.  Can they sneak past one more and head to Natchitoches for a state championship? We’ll find out Friday night.

  1. The player’s name was Brendon Harris not DeTravion Knowles who recovered the bad snap.
