One thing is going to be for certain next week.  There will be a team from Claiborne Parish in the Caesar’s Superdome on championship week.  We will get the Claiborne Parish Superbowl II in 2021 for a shot at the Class A state championship next week.  Haynesville went to the Lake Charles area and shut out Grand Lake.  Homer manhandled White Castle for the second year in a row in the quarterfinals.  Calvary didn’t get to celebrate, though, as they fell in an overtime heartbreak rematch with Ouachita Christian in Monroe.

Homer 40, White Castle 6

Homer showed they meant business as they scored in less than two minutes when Takeviuante Kidd connected with Devante Champ to take the early 7-0 lead.  A lot of turnovers on tempting scores deep in the red zone.  One such play saw Homer fumble and the Bulldogs took it back to the 1/2 yard line.  Homer’s defense forced the fumble and stopped the score. Homer took the 7-0 lead into the second quarter. 

The Kidd-Champ connection struck again midway through the second quarter to push the two-touchdown lead.  More defense struck forcing fumbles and interceptions.  Both defenses had stellar games and the halftime score showed with the Pels 13-0 lead. 

Elyjay Curry got loose and found the end zone and took the Pelicans to lead to 19-0 in the third.  White Castle scored in the closing minute of the third quarter to head into the final quarter 19-6. 

Homer unleashed in the fourth quarter to ensure they were going back home next week for the semis.  Curry crashed the end zone twice in the fourth.  LaMichael “Rudy” Greer took a pick-six to the house and sent the Pels to the semis in Homer.  

Haynesville 17, Grand Lake 0

Haynesville advanced to the semifinals for the first time since 2018.   The Tors upset the No. 3 Grand Lake Hornets 17-0 in Lake Charles on Friday night.  Haynesville’s defense had the sting as they held Grand Lake to 84 yards total offense in the shutout and put two points on the board with a safety.  J’Karious Green led the Tors offense with 62 yards and a touchdown.  Kyle Woodard also took a keeper into the zone.   

The two teams kept each other out of the end zone in the first quarter.  Green broke the scoreless game with a 9-yard run midway through the second quarter.  Toby Franklin took the conversion into the end zone to give Haynesville the 8-0 leading heading into halftime.  

Kyle Woodard gave the Tors a little cushion in their lead with a 1-yard run and extra point by Franklin to take the 15-0 lead.   The defense stayed solid and made sure they were represented on the scoreboard with a safety in the fourth.  The Tors maintained the shutout and head to the semifinals with a rematch against arch-rival Homer next Friday night. 

Ouachita Christian  40, Calvary 37 OT

Landry Lyddy finished his senior year at Calvary passing for 4247 yards and 53 yards and a QB rating of 141.6.  A phenomenal ending a career wasn’t fairytale as the Cavaliers fell in overtime to who’s becoming an annual rival in Ouachita Christian.  Lyddy passed for 375 yards and a touchdown and took a keeper into the end zone.  Miles Williams rushed for 75 yards and two touchdowns.  Aubrey Hermes also scored a touchdown against the Eagles.   Caleb Clement scored 13 points for the Cavs with four extra points and three field goals.  On defense, Trev Davis led with 7.5 tackles (5 solo, 5 assist).  Cade Bedgood took 6 tackles (4 solo, 4 assist) and 2 tackle for losses. Tahj Simeneaux also had 6 tackles (4 solo, 4 assist) and snatched an interception.  Denham Smith grabbed the other turnover with a fumble recovery.  

OCS scored first in the game on a three yard TD pass.  The Cavs in the second quarter came back as Lyddy scored on a 1-yard touchdown to even the game early in the fourth.  Less than a minute later the Eagles scored on a 12-yard touchdown pass.  Calvary cut the lead to 14-10 with three minutes left in the half on a 37-yard field goal from Caleb Clement.  Calvary got back possession on a Tahj Simeneaux interception.  Miles Williams gave Calvary their first lead on a 1-yard run with 36 seconds remaining.  Calvary took the 17-14 lead into halftime.  

Calvary continued their momentum into the third quarter with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Lyddy to Aubrey Hermes pushing their lead to 24-14 a little over seven minutes left in the third.  Defense struck again when Denham Smith recovered a fumble on the Cavalier 48.  The Cavs kicker Clement struck again with a 28-yard field goal.  Calvary was up 27-14 with 3 minutes left in the third quarter.   Ouachita Christian made sure they stayed close with a touchdown in the last two minutes of the third.  Calvary took a 27-21 into the final quarter.  

The Eagles returned the first punt of the night by the Cavs inside the Cavalier territory at the CBA 36.   With 9 1/2 minutes remaining, Ouachita Christian took the lead with another touchdown at 28-27.  OCS struck again with 5 1/2 remaining with another touchdown but the extra point is blocked.  OCS up 34-27.   The Cavs were  not ready to throw in the towel.  Lyddy hits KJ Thomas on an 80 yard pass.  Miles Williams crashes into end zone to tie the game with 3:42 remaining.  Calvary held on to the tie to the end of regulation.  

Calvary gets first possession of the over time and Clement gives the 37-34 lead on a 37-yard field goal.  OCS reaches the end zone on their possession to head to the Division IV championship for the third consecutive year.
