The Shreveport United men were working on the comeback of the 2023 GCPL as they were still in the hunt for the final Western Conference playoff spot.  The challenge was to knock off the first-place Central Texas Lobos who had not lost a match all season and then force a must-win against Daggers CTX less than 24 hours later.

Shreveport United Men 1, Central Texas Lobos 0

Jarron Peteras scored the lone goal against the Central Texas Lobos.  Task one was in the books as Shreveport United gave the Central Texas Lobos their sole loss for the season with a 1-0 win in San Marcos on Saturday.  This sets up a final shot at the playoffs with Daggers CTX on Sunday at noon.   A win will be the only way that Shreveport United can make the postseason.  A loss or tie and the Daggers advanced to the playoffs.

Shreveport United Men 1, Daggers CTX 1 (tie)

Shreveport United struggled as they couldn’t convert on their many opportunities.  Daggers struck in the first half on a controversial call and took the 1-0 lead into halftime.  Drained legs from the battle the day before started to kick in as they shifted to a 3-5-2 formation.  Diego Martinez evened the score in the 80th minute.  A tie would not advance United to the playoffs.  United got a few more chances but the final whistle blew on not only the match but the season of Shreveport United men.

The United Men lost heartbreaker after heartbreaker at the beginning of the season in 1-goal matches starting 0-4.  Hanging on the edge of elimination by a fingertip, the boys battle to miss the playoffs by one goal and a 3-4-1 finish to their season.

“Hearts are broken and legs are exhausted,” Coach Gary McCormack said. “We’re proud of this group of players and we’ll be back next summer.”

Texas United 22, Blue Goose SC 0

For the fourth time this season, Blue Goose lost in double digits.  The score is not a misprint.  The 22-goal gap is the largest in USL2 Including PDL history.  The margin of victory broke the previous record of 14-1 by the Flint Bucks over Derby City Rovers.  The 22 goals are also the highest-scoring game in the history of USL2.   First-place Texas United had a 9-0 halftime. Texas United did not let up as they scored four goals in the final 10 minutes as they already had an 18-0 lead.  Texas United had ten separate scorers.  Sergio Ovs Navarro had a hat trick by halftime and finished with a double hat trick at the end of the game (10,16,45,54,61,74).  Seth Mahlmeister also had a double hat trick (4,24, 55, 60, 66, 79).  Majcol Reyes and Bryce Boneau each scored two goals.  Taylor Dyson, Timothy Mason, Alexander Estrada Avila, Alioune Ka, Issa Badawiya, and Andrian Renteria all scored goals.

Blue Goose is looking for revenge next weekend (July 15) at home against Texas United in their final match of the season.

Shreveport United Women

Shreveport United had a slight chance of being bumped from their playoff spot but Cajun Rush would have to beat Central Louisiana by 13 goals.  Cajun Rush won over the Alexandria-based Central Louisiana 6-0. This secured the second-place Western Conference playoff spot.

Shreveport United Women will now head to Hattiesburg FC on Saturday, July 15 for the semifinal matchup.  The winner will advance to the GCPL Women’s Cup in Foley, Alabama.
