For the second consecutive weekend, the Shreveport Mudbugs faced the Lone Star Brahmas.  Last weekend, the Mudbugs swept at George’s Pond.  This weekend the home team once again prevailed.  The Mudbugs lost 4-2 on Friday night and in a shootout on Saturday evening.  

With the sweep, the Mudbugs are in a four-way tie for first place with Colorado Grit, Lone Star Brahmas, and New Mexico Ice Wolves.  The South Division is currently from top to bottom within a series sweep of moving to the top of the standings.

Lone Star 4, Mudbugs 2

Plenty of power play opportunities were given in the first period despite no goals.  Lone Star had the first power play with a high sticking call against Logan Heroux.  Shreveport killed the power play.  Shreveport had their first opportunity with a high sticking call it was cut short and moved to 4-on-4 skate when Kyan Haldenby was called for high sticking.  The two teams were at full strength just two seconds when Shreveport gave Collin Vassallo was call for tripping.  Shreveport once again survived the power play and lasted the period with no score. 

Shreveport struck first in the second period with a goal for Andreja Paricka with assists credited to Lucas Deeb and Will Murphy.  The rivalry sparked some chippy action and penalties.  Lone Star’s Ivan Zadvernyuk was called for unsportsmanlike conduct along with Shreveport’s Logan Heroux.  Justin Kerr was also sent to the box on an interference call.  Less than two minutes later, Ryan Burke received a game misconduct with a head contact penalty.  More shenanigans occurred when Lone Star’s Charlie Masek was called for diving as Mudbug Liam Fleet was called for roughing.  Shreveport added a goal by Collin Vassallo during the 4-on-4 to take the 2-0 lead.  Haldenby and Heroux were given the assists.   Shreveport had another power play opportunity with an interference.  Just 38 seconds into the power play, the two went back to 4-on-4 with a slashing call on Brayden Cook.  Lone Star’s Brock James scored with 1:20 remaining in the period cutting the lead to 2-1 where the score stayed for the remainder of the period.  

Lone Star took control in the third period.   Lone Star took the lead in the first two minutes of the third period.  David Skuhrovec netted the game-tying goal.   Lone Star received a power play but Shreveport kept the score tied.  With a little less than eight minutes remaining, Lone Star took their first lead with a goal from Bryce Ingles.  Malyas Borak let only 20 seconds tick off the clock before adding the insurance goal to give the Brahmas the 4-2 win.

Lone Star outshot Shreveport 19-9.  Carson Dorfman had 15 saves in the loss. 

Lone Star 2, Mudbugs 1 (SOL)

For the second consecutive night, the first period produced no goals.  Shreveport got the first power play but was unable to capitalize.  Lone Star was given a power play on a roughing call by Liam Fleet.  Shreveport’s defense kept the puck out of the net.  The Mudbugs received a carry-over power play to the second period.  Shreveport and Lone Star were scoreless heading into the second period.

The Mudbugs had 41 seconds of a power play to start the second period but were unable to net a goal.  Ten seconds back at full strength, though, Charlie Masek scored for Lone Star.  Mudbugs’ Brent Litchard received a roughing call with a 10-minute major attached along with a double minor.  Logan Heroux was also sent to the sin bin for loo poop slashing.  Hayden Nichol snuck in a short-handed goal to even the score at 1-1.  Lone Star received another power play.  The two teams stayed tied to 1-1.  

The third period saw the Mudbugs get another power play opportunity but the Brahmas killed it to keep the game tied.  The Mudbugs returned the favor with too many men on the ice.  Once again, Shreveport pushed through to keep the score tight.  The two teams continued swapping power play opportunities but at the end of regulation, the score remained 1-1. 

Shreveport went down a man with an interference call in the shortened overtime.  The defense held back a goal and no change at the end of overtime.  

The two went to a shootout to decide the outcome.  Brahmas’ Justin Kerr’s sole goal in the shootout was the result needed to give Lone Star the sweep. 

Shreveport outshot Lone Star 32-17.  Elliot Seguin-Lescarbeau had 31 saves. 

The Mudbugs return to George’s Pond this coming weekend for a series against the New Mexico Ice Wolves.
