The Ochsner LHSAA Powerlifting State Championships are being held at the Cajun Dome in Lafayette this weekend. Division IV and Division V boys and girls powerlifting competed on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.
Many Tigers claimed their third consecutive state title in Division IV despite having to share it with Episcopal. Both teams scored 36 points to share the state championship. Calvary lurked close behind in third place with 33 points. Winnfield tied for fourth with 25 points. Mansfield grabbed one individual title.
In Division V, Cedar Creek Cougars received a state runner-up barely getting edged out by Ascension Catholic. St. Mary’s made a strong showing in fifth place.
D’Arbonne Woods lady lifters dominated Division V to capture the state title. Calvary Lady Cavs finished in third. Lakeside Lady Warriors claimed three runner-ups in a team sixth-place finish.
Cedar Creek Lady Cougars claimed back-to-back Division V powerlifting titles holding off runner-up Holden by 14 points. Haynesville, Castor, and Ringgold all took place on the podium.
Many Tigers claimed three individual titles in Lafayette. Sophomore Demario Woods claimed the 114 weight class for the second consecutive year. Woods had a squat of 285, bench of 155, and a deadlift of 385 for a total of 825 lbs. Chase Higginbotham can claim the title of a champion now after finishing runner-up last year. Higginbotham lifted 910 lbs (350-S, 200-B, 360-D to claim the 123 title. Dutch Kor took a gold medal back to Sabine Parish lifting 1385 lbs (545-S, 275-B, 565-D) to win the 198 class. Colton Boswell moved up to the 220 weight class and found success as he claimed an individual state runner-up. Adam Miller finished third in the SHW division for the Tigers.
Calvary Cavaliers placed five lifters on the podium. Jordan Byrd was the sole gold medalist for the Cavaliers. Byrd ends his lifting career at Calvary as back-to-back champ in the 220 weight class. Last year was in Division V but this year in Division IV. Byrd lifted 1510 lbs (585-S, 410-B, 515-D). Sophomore Dalton Creech gained his second state medal with a state runner-up in the 123 class. Michael Legler finished as state runner-up in the 181 class. Third-place finishers for the Cavaliers were Evan Curry (114), Sam Davis (132), and Brandon Stephens (148).
Winnfield Tigers claimed three medals in Division IV meet. Alex Adams repeated as the 220 champions lifted 1340 lbs. (455-S, 335-B, 550-D). Adams ends his career as a two-time champ and runner-up in 2021. Clayton Chandler improved from his fifth-place finish last year to grab a third-place medal in the 198 division. Jake Norsworthy finished third in the heavily contested 220 division.
Terrence Pegues, Jr won the 275 class for the Mansfield Wolverines lifting 1365 lbs. (500-S, 305-B, 560-D).
Calvary Lady Cavaliers won three classes at the state meet. Emma Lazarus claimed her second state championship. Lazarus finished as runner-up last year in the 105 class in Division V but won in Division IV this year lifting 615 lbs. (245-S, 105-B, 265-D). This is the fourth state championship in the Lazarus household as sister Allie won the 97s in 2018 and 2019. The 114 class had drama as Calvary’s Breanne Jones and Pope John Paul IIs Brokke Becker both finished with 690 lbs. The tiebreaker is the pounds per actual weight. Jones edged out Becker by 0.3 lbs. Jones finished runner-up last year in the 114. Mireya Roberson was the only lifter in Division IV that lifted over 1000 lbs. barrier. Roberson won the SHW class lifting 1015 lbs (455-S, 180-B, 380-D).
Lakeside Lady Warriors took four medals back home including three state runner-ups. Krystal Cornelious was edged out of the state championship by five pounds. Trinity Eason finished second in the SHW. Madison Miller gained a state runner-up in the 220 class. Ashlyn Ricketson took the bronze in the 198.
Sontee Jones gave the Many Lady Tigers their sole medal placing third in the 220 class.
Cedar Creek Cougars took home eight medals at the state championships. Quincy Lewis claimed the sole state championship for the Cougars lifting 1475 lbs (530-S, 360-B, 585-D) in the 198 class. Owen Robinson finished as state runner-up in the 165 class. Robinson finished as runner-up last year and third two years ago. Lane Thomas also finished as state runner-up in the 181 class. Landon Amidon also claimed a state runner-up in the 220 class. Cedar Creek had four three third-place finishes: Blake Wade (123), Parker Newman (148), Brett Johnson (198), and Nicholas Thompson (220).
St. Mary’s won two state championships in Lafayette. Kolton Norsworthy stepped a weight class to the 242 and gained a state championship in his senior year. Norsworthy lifted 1400 lbs (515-S, 350-B, 535-D). Drake Griffin won the 220 class lifting 1380.lbs (525-S,320-B, 535-D).
Cedar Creek Lady Cougars claimed back-to-back titles behind winning five weight classes and collecting another five top-three finishes. Two title winners are repeat champions and a third podium visit for them. Madelyn Carroll was one of the two who won the 123 class lifting 785 lbs (305-S, 145-B, 335–D). Carroll was the champ last year and runner-up in 2021. The same was the case with Peyton Muse who won the 132 class lifting 830 lbs. (315-S, 175-B, 340-D). Ainsley Riley returned to the top of the podium after finishing runner-up last year. Riley lifted 855 lbs. (340-S, 200-B, 315-D) winning the 148 class. Ashlyn Bourn stepped up to a state championship in the 181 class lifting 885 lbs. (330-S, 200-B, 355-D). Bourn finished as state runner-up last year and third in 2021. Lauren Enterkin was new to the podium claiming the state title in the 165 class lifting 890 (360-S, 210–B, 320-D). A couple of the state runner-ups for the Lady Cougars were hindered by their teammates. Emma Moore was edged out by Carroll by 5 lbs in the 123 class. Moore’s performance was enough to garner a state runner-up. Olivia Salter finished behind Enterkin in the 165 class but was strong enough to gain a state runner-up. Alli Claire Johnson finished as state runner-up in the 97 class. Paisly Hamby (114) and Elli Dickerson (148) took third-place medals for the Cougars.
Haynesville reached the podium twice. Alexa O’Glee-Neal took a state runner-up medal in the 198 class. Zaelayasia Johnson finished third in the 165 class.
Castor’s Ananiah Johnson returned to the podium for the Lady Tigers with a third-place finish in the SHW division. Johnson missed the podium last year with a fourth-place finish.
Zyon Bell gave the Ringgold Lady Skins their first state medal since 2011. Bell finished third in 2020 getting the 220 division.
