Locals Show Out At LHSAA State Indoor Track and Field Championship - Under The Radar - NW Louisiana

The LHSAA Indoor Track & Field State Championships were held this weekend at Carl Maddox Fieldhouse on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge.   Local teams from Doyline, Quitman, Loyola Prep, Calvary Baptist, Mansfield, Castor, and Green Oaks had competitors qualify for the state meet.  To qualify, competitors had to have one of the top 16 from all qualifying meets in the 60-meter dash and hurdles, pole vault, shot put, high jump, and triple jump.  The top 12 in the 400 m dash, 800 m dash, 1600 m dash, 3200 m dash, 4 x 200 relay, 4 x 400 relay, and 4 x 800 relay in the six qualifying meets held at LSU in Baton Rouge and McNeese State in Lake Charles.  

Doyline Panthers one-woman machine Izayla Harris gained the highest team ranking among local teams in Division II (3A-C).  The Panthers finished in 7th place overall with 24 points in the Division II girls’ competition behind Harris’ three medals.  Harris was state champion in the 60 m dash running in 7.71 seconds.  The Alcorn State commit also was state runner-up in the triple jump finishing second with 11.02 m.  The two-time Oustanding Athlete in Class B for outdoor track and field had a third place finish in the 400 m dash with 59.33 seconds. 

Quitman Wolverines finished 11th in the Division II boys competition with 12 points.  The Wolverines points were pushed by a state championship from Bryan Lay in the pole vaults.  Lay secured the state championship behind his 14’ 6” pole vault.  The Quitman 4 x 400 relay team claimed a fifth place finish for points.  Memebers of the 4 x 400 team were Nathan Harvey, Gage Yates, Jayden Hart, and Brayden Smith.

Loyola Prep Flyers tied in 11th place along with Quitman with 12 points.  Franklin “Tripp” Roemer finished third in both the 1600m (4:26.16) and 3200 m (9:49.20) runs.

The Calvary Cavaliers finished 15th overall with 10 points from a state championship from Jackson Burney in the 800 m run (1:59.31).

Mansfield was the only local school to gain points for both the boys and the girls.  Mansfield boys scored 6 points behind Jayden Youngblood’s third place finish in the 60 m hurdles in 8.29 seconds.  The Lady Wolverines scored 4 points with the help of a 4th place finish in the 4 x 200 relay in 1:52.83.  Members of the 4 x 200 relay were Germanee Robertson, La’Brasia Ross, Trinity Ford, and La’Jordan Boykins. 

Castor Lady Tigers also gained a couple of points at the state championships with a 5th place finish by Anna Myers in the pole vault.
