The Homer Pelicans can say mission accomplished as they won the 2021 Class A state championship 41-28 over the No. 1 seed Logansport Tigers on Saturday afternoon at the Caesar’s Superdome.  It’s been 82 years since the Pelicans held the moniker of state champion in high school football.  The Pelicans’ domination was powered by the running strength of Elyjay Curry and Takeviuante Kidd.   The Pel defense held the Tigers on the strong play by Andrevious Buggs.

Elyjay Curry kicked the scoring off for Homer with a 53 yard run in the middle of the first quarter.  Takeviuante Kidd found Devante Champ in the end zone on a 24 yd touchdown pass late in the quarter but missed the extra point.  Homer wasn’t done with the quarter as Derron Donnell and Katreverick Banks grabbed a pair of pick-sixes on 28 and 50-yard returns, respectively.  Homer took a 27-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.  

Logansport finally got on the world in the second quarter with a touchdown pass from Boykins to Claybrook.  The Tigers converted the two-point conversion.  Takeviuante “Popcorn” Kidd took to special teams as he returned a kickoff 79 yards for a touchdown.  On the defense at halftime,  Andrevious Buggs already had 5.5 tackles (4 solos, 3 assist).  Elyjay Curry accumulated 105 rushing yards in the first half.  The Pels took a 34-8 lead into the locker room at halftime. Logansport scored first in the second half with a short run.   Homer countered with a 40-plus yard touchdown pass from Kidd to Jamarquese Hampton to push the lead to 41-14 lead.  Katreverick Banks grabbed a long pass interception and protect the lead into the fourth quarter.  

Logansport’s Boykins kicked off the fourth quarter hitting Hill on a 20-plus yard touchdown.  The Tiger completed the two-point conversion to close in 41-22 with 10:26 remaining.  The Tigers clawed back with 7:13 with a 76-yard touchdown from Boykin to Jacob Contario. The two-point conversion failed.  Logansport closed the lead to 41-28.   With a little over 4 minutes remaining, Logansport’s Ja’Caleb Robinson grabbed an interception on their own 5.   Logansport marched to the Homer 15.  Telkeldrick Webb snatched an interception at their own 1 with a little over 3 minutes remaining to lock in the first state championship in football since 1939.  

Elyjay Curry rushed for over 230 yards for the game.  Katreverick Banks was announced as the NFHSplayer of the game with two interceptions including a pick-six.
