District 1-A and 1-C started district play on Friday night.  Although COVID continues to wreak on the play postponing the district matchup between Glenbrook and Calvary and the District 1-C boys matchup for Gibsland-Coleman and Summerfield, the rest of the district continued to play.  District 1-A boys district play has been altered due to Magnolia School of Excellence opting out of the remainder of their season.

Ringgold and Lincoln Prep showed anything can happen in the district.  Asijah Wright had a 14 point night to break the Lady Panthers’ 10-game losing streak.  The Lady Panthers opened the first quarter quickly with a 20-4 lead.  Ringgold closed the gap to 23-13 at halftime.  Ringgold went cold in the second half with no field goals and a single free throw by Reed.  Heather Cox was the top Ringgold scorer with 8 points.   Cox was the top scorer for the girl this week with 21 points against North Webster earlier on Monday.

Ringgold and Lincoln Prep boys had some fast action.  Ringgold started fast and jumped on the 14-8 first-quarter lead.  Lincoln Prep attempted to push their fast pace game, but Ringgold held back.  Glimpses of both methods showed through as they both scored 13 in the second.  Ringgold maintained their lead to halftime at 27-21.   The Panthers must have had some serious discussion during halftime because they didn’t even come out for a practice shooting.  The talk must have paid off.  The Panthers slammed a smothering full-court press and pushed the game to a tie at 31-31 at 3:05.  The two traded leads back into the final seconds of the third quarter.  The quarter closed with the biggest lead by Lincoln Prep with a basket by D’mitry Payne followed by a steal by Te’rell Simmons and two points had Lincoln Prep up 40-36.  The fourth quarter saw Ringgold’s goal with a lid as the shots failed to fall and Lincoln Prep was on a roll.  The frustrations with Ringgold show two techs late in the final period.   Lincoln Prep pulled out the first district win with a 57-42 score.

Gibsland-Coleman took an early district lead with a 43-38 win over Summerfield.  Once again, Samora Sampson showed out with 21 points.  Malaysia Tate had another big night for the Lady Rebels.

Big points were the goal last week as three local boys cracked the 30-point mark.  Bowman Lovell had two top performances but the 31 points against Claiborne Academy stuck out.   Homer’s D’Anthony Kimble bucketed 39 in their Pels district win over Plain Dealing.  The big drop this week came from the Doyline Panthers as Jamari Markray netted 43 points over North Webster.

Arcadia girls did it again as they placed three on the Starting 5 and Next 5 with wins over Lakeside and Simsboro.

District play will kick off for District 1-B next week on Friday with Doyline traveling to Castor.
