District titles have been decided except one and girls begin their journey to Marsh Madness this week. It was an exciting week especially for girls basketball as they tried to pull the wins into those final power ranking points to pull up their opportunities in the playoff race.
Arcadia Lady Hornets wrapped up the District 1-A title undefeated with a one-point win over the rising Lincoln Prep Lady Panthers. The district championship bonus power point pushed them to a No.5 seed and a first-round bye. Jay Halcy’s push gave them their first district title since 2018.
On the boys’ side of District 1-A, Calvary claimed an undefeated 7-0 district title. Last year they shared the title with Arcadia. Labree Williams had a 44 point night against Haynesville. The Cavs took 6 wins in 8 days.
District 1-B new girls district champions are the Castor Lady Tiger. Castor is rolling into the playoffs on a hot streak winning 9 of their last 10 games. The Lady Tigers clinched the district with a win over Doyline on Monday night. Speaking of the Lady Panthers, they played five games winning three last week. Keily Sumlin made three top performances of the week. Guess what? The first round of the playoff will see round three between the two teams.
District 1-B is not quite completely decided. Doyline has claimed at least a share of the district title, but still, has one more district game against Saline. A win and it’s an outright title for the Panthers. The two will meet on Friday to finalize the district title.
District 1-C has been decided for a couple of weeks, but the girls’ district is going to give Class C a run for the money. Gibsland-Coleman is No.2 and Summerfield is No. 3. The Lady Bulldogs ended the regular season with 4A powerhouse Huntington in Shreveport. GCHS came up short but an impressive showing. Summerfield reaches the 25-win mark for the season. Playoffs could be interesting as the two are on a path that could lead to a rematch in Hammond at Marsh Madness.
On the MAIS front, Providence Knights hosted the MAIS South Region tournament. They received a first-round bye which automatically qualified them for the Class 3A tournament in Greenville, MS. Friday night, the Knight overcame a late fourth-quarter deficit to knock out WCCA in the semis. The Knights’s defense never let up on Saturday in the championship against Discovery Christian. Bowman Lovell, Paxton Lovell, Cole Thornton, and Daniel West made the all-tournament team.
