Call it Lucky Number 7 title as the Arcadia Lady Hornets (32-3) got revenge for last year’s elimination in the last second by Oakdale last season in the semifa.  The Lady Hornets won 48-32  in the 2024 rematch in the Division IV Nonselect State Championship. This was their first title since 2016.

The Lady Hornets’ dominance in the paint and on second-chance points gained them their seventh title.  Arcadia outscore Oakdale 24-12 in the paint and 23-8 on second chance points.

Arcadia made sure they were going home with some hardware as they controlled the lead 28 of the 32 minutes.

Arcadia was led by Justice Young who was a beast under the boards scoring 16 points and snagging 19 rebounds.  Arianna Williams also had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Rhyanna Abbey added 8 for the Lady Hornets. DeAsia Alexander was the defensive machine for Arcadia with 11 rebound (8 defensive) and swatting away the competition with 8 blocks and contributing 4 points.  Ja’Kyria Cockerham and Jayla Mendenhall each added 4 points.

Oakdale was led by Akeelah Hobson who scored 15 points.

The two stayed tight in the first quarter with Arcadia leading 10-7.  Oakdale closed the gap to 20-18 by halftime.  Arcadia defense kicked in high gear in the thir quarter as Oakdale only managed one field goal.  The Lady Hornets headed into the final quarter up 33-22.  Arcadia was going to ensure that a squeaker wasn’t going to stop them for a state title as they outscored the Lady Warriors 15-10 on to the 48-32 victory.

Heading into the last full month of basketball and some schools are still in a holiday break.  The last tournaments of the season took place in Negreet, Bossier, and Ouachita Parish.  Red River travelled down south to participate in French Settlement tournament.

District play begins this coming week for most of the Class A districts.  For the second year in a row, District 1-A will have a season ending district tournament.  Each team will play once to determine seeding and then play a tournament to determine a champion.  This was also done in 1-2A last season.  Leads to an exciting end to the regular season before playoffs.

Michael Jones of Choudrant had a big week for the Aggies.  Kayla Kimbrough was the top scorer for Zwolle Hawks and also for the girls for the week

Check out some pics from the Negreet Tournament with Choudrant Girls facing Negreet Lady Indians and the powerhouse matchup between Negreet and Zwolle.

Eighteen seconds.  What’s the question?  How long did Calvary have the lead in the Division III Select State Championship?  The Cavaliers (13-0) won the 34-28 state championship over the St. Charles Comets (12-1) on Saturday in Caesar’s Superdome.  This is the fourth title for Calvary and second for head coach Rodney Guin.  This was Guin’s first chance to compete for a state championship in the Superdome.  Guin’s last championship with the Cavaliers was won at Northwestern State University in 2020.  The win also stopped the Comets from claiming a third consecutive state championship.

The Cavaliers claimed the title on the back of James Simon who had 30 carries for 190 yards and three touchdowns Abram Wardell passed 23-for-32 for 230 yards and two touchdowns and one interception.  Aubrey Hermes was the top target with 7 receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown.  Kolby Thomas also had a touchdown reception in the closing seconds.

St. Charles Catholic Jeremiah Wills had 11 carries for 71 yards and two rushing touchdowns.  Brady St. Pierre was 7-for-11 for 147 yards and had a hand in two touchdowns for the Comets. Daniel Joseph was on the receiving end of two touchdowns from St. Pierre. Joseph had 3 catches for 85 yards.

The Comets got the only score in the first quarter with a 68-yard touchdown pass from St. Pierre to Joseph.  The Cavaliers were knocking on the door to the end zone on then1 when time ran out in the first quarter as St. Charles Catholic was up 7-0 at the end of the quarter.

The first play of the second quarter sees Simon head into the end zone. The extra point was missed as St. Charles led 7-6.  The big play Comets strike again on the next drive as Wills bolts for the end zone on a 46-yard touchdown.  The Cavalier lost the ball for the second time on loss of downs.  Calvary’s defense snaps back the ball after Cole Miller recovers a fumble midfield.  Calvary tried to stay on and closed the gap after Simon scored on a 3-yard run and closed in 14-13.  It was too close for comfort for the Comets.  Brayden Betucci snags an interception and sets up another score for the Comets on a 14-yard touchdown pass to and gives the Comets the 28-13 halftime head:

Calvary goes three and out then their punt is muffed but St. Charles Catholic takes over in Cavalier territory.  St. Charles Catholic finally broke the cycle of punts as Wills scored on a 3-yard run to widen the lead to 28-13.  Calvary went on an 11-play drive that resulted in a 25-yard touchdown run.  St. Charles up 28-19 after three quarters.

Calvary’s bad luck seemed to follow them into the fourth as the Cavaliers started at their own 3 and then had to punt. St. Charles marched down to the red zone where the Cavalier defense forced the Comets to kick a field goal that was missed. With 4:20 remaining, Wardell completed 5 of 6 passes and Simon added an 18-yard run.  Wardell struck Hermes on a 20-yard touchdown pass.  The Cavalier converted the two-point conversion and closed in 28-26.  Hoping for one more drive, the Cavaliers burned through all three timeouts.  The Comets reached midfield and were held to a 4th-and-1.  A first down wrapped up the game for the Comets.  Roman McMillan had St. Pierre around the waist and gave Calvary one last shot with 44 seconds remaining.  Wardell hit Kolby Thompson on a 17-yard reception.  Wardell had to scramble for a first down.  With 18 seconds remaining, Wardell connected with Thomas on a 20-yard touchdown pass.  Calvary took their first and final lead at 34-28.  St Charles tried one last gasp on a hook and ladder play but a miscue had the ball dropped and picked up by Hutch Grace locking in the state championship.

Mother Nature played havoc on the Blue Goose home game at Airline High School but the two teams finally got to start around 9 pm.  Blue Goose looked to hold things together until the 42nd minute when Krewe’s Gonzalo Carrasco scored the first goal in the first half.  Krewe led 1-0 at halftime.  The secondhalf saw Uros Rosic score in the 67th minute to give Krewe the 2-0 lead.  Carrasco gained his second goal in the 78th minute and pushed LA Krewe to 3-0.  Blue Goose scored their only goal in the 80th minute with Oliver Jimenez Samchez shot.  The goal came at a price as Sanchez had received a yellow card in the 78th minute.  Sanchez collected a second yellow card converting to a red and sending Blue Goose to 10-men.  Former BOCA FC player from Bossier City and Wiley College player Quesi Weston added a fourth goal for LA Krewe in the 89th minute

Blue Goose will have one more home game this coming weekend at Airline High School until July 15.  They will face first place Texas United on Saturday night at 7:00 pm.

Another school year has passed and Under The Radar NWLA has enjoyed covering and watching your teams thrive and get the much-deserved attention you get and deserve.  if you didn’t know, we expanded our coverage by adding 2A this season. We also expanded our coverage from just three districts to a true Northwest Louisiana coverage area adding schools from 2A through C.  Our true coverage area now is well and continues to be Caddo, Bossier, Webster, Claiborne, Lincoln, Winn, Jackson, Bienville, Natchitoches, Desoto, Red River, and Sabine. A total jump from 15 schools to 45 schools.  I questioned my sanity at times and hope you were pleased with the coverage of your school this year. Enough about me.

Northwest Louisiana shined again this season.  Many not only a football state title but also a powerlifting title.  Homer made it back to the football championship in newly formatted playoff divisions instead of classes.  Zwolle dominated another basketball state title.  Converse claimed a softball title while Calvary claimed their third in a row.  Gibsland-Coleman dominated track state titles.  Castor took a state runner-up.  We saw stars like Izayla Harris and Samora Sampson claim Outstanding Athletes once again. North Louisiana was represented by four local schools at the baseball tournament.  Also, Providence Classical Academy in Bossier reaches the All-Class tournament, a feat that is a gauntlet of playoffs to reach.

Enjoy these moments.  I know there are a lot more that I may have left out.  My friends this is just a small part of your life to come.  The opportunities are an open road for your future.  Some will head to college and a few will continue to play the sport of their passion.  Some will head to serve our country, you will get to see parts of the world some safe and some dangerous.  Sink it all in.  Get the experiences that are presented.  Some will head into the workforce.  Those that I see do this can’t wait to get started and start a new part of their lives.  So many options for you.

If you want some old fool’s advice, lend me your ear for a minute.  Cherish each day.  Jump on the journey and ride it like a cowboy.  Sometimes you get bucked off and sometimes you survive that metaphor 8 seconds.  Enjoy the ride.  Get up and go again. Here are three things to think about each day:

Live Each Day

You only get one life.  Live it.  Whatever path you get on, make the most of the journey.  Each person’s journey is unique.  Don’t ever compare yourself to another.  You are unique and what you find exciting may not be to others.  Be excited about your journey.  Take time to enjoy it.  You will have a lifetime of work and worry.  Don’t miss out on experiences.  If you didn’t know, I lived in Denver for a year and a half.  Sometimes I think back that I wish I would have done more there.  I did get some great experiences.  The 19-hour drive from Denver to Shreveport let me experience the beautiful terrains of southern Colorado, the mesas of New Mexico, how BIG the state of Texas is, and how valuable home was.  I also got to see places in Utah, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, California, Nevada, Kansas, Nebraska, Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan, Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, and so many wonderful people.

Love Each Day

I know this is an exciting time and for some of you at small schools, you’ve gone to school with maybe your whole class your whole life.  At this point, this looks like lifetime friends.  Some may become lifetime friends to you your entire life.  A fact though, your friend circles will change especially when your independence kicks in and you want to experience new adventures.  Some you can’t be ready to get away from the people you’ve grown up with.  Don’t shut people out.  Some of my best friends that I have in my life were not in my class.  We didn’t hang out at school but grew a strong friendship afterward that I cherish and love.  Be open to new people.  Your circles will change and the world can be a lonely place.  Reach out to new friends.  Make new bonds.  Find new loves.  You get to be you and don’t allow others to accept less.  One pill that might be hard to swallow and hard to see at this point.  In the case of many, family will always be there for you.  I know this doesn’t work for everyone, but find others that you can define as family.  Don’t lose your passion.  If your passion is God in your life, continue to seek His wisdom and glory.  Find the time to continue to grow your fire for that passion in your life.  Look for the blessings in your life and you will find the love you need each day

Learn Each Day

How many of you have said I will never have to use Algebra again in my life? Guess what? WRONG…You drive a car and know how fast you are going and then how many miles you need to go, you can tell me how long it will take to get there …algebra… What you learned in school was the tip of the iceberg.  I’m 50 years old and still learning.  When you learn, you grow.  Life becomes boring when you don’t learn.  It doesn’t have to be academics.  Learn about people.  The more you learn about others the more you understand them.  Those people you may have found difficult in high school, you get to know and learn about them you may understand their difficulty and you may find a best friend for life.  Don’t be afraid to go out of your comfort zone.  We become stagnant in our comfort zone we don’t learn new skills or possibly undiscovered talents that we may have.  Listen to advice and learn from others.  One thing that I’ve always followed is someone is always smarter than you, so they have more to teach.  Be willing to learn.

This old man has rambled enough and I hope you have enjoyed this.  To the seniors of 2023, I wish you nothing but success in your endeavors and excitement on your new paths.  I have enjoyed watching many of you play your sports and look forward to what your lives have to offer.  Seniors 2023…out…
