Summerfield’s Trace Morrow advance to Day 2 of the LHSAA State Championship at Century Link Center in Bossier City on Friday afternoon. The No. 2 ranked wrestler in Division 3’s 182 classification pulled off two matches to advance to semi-finals tomorrow. He is guaranteed a spot on the podium with the two wins today.

Morrow won his first match with a late pin in the first period against Camden Maroon from Church Point.

Morrow faced Cameran Mire from Kaplan in the quarterfinals. The Summerfield student had a takedown with the first 30 seconds. Mire escaped about 8 seconds later. Morrow gained another takedown late in the first period to take the early 4-1 lead after the first period. Mire started on the bottom at the beginning and managed to get away from the Rebel in the first 30 seconds. Morrow took control with a takedown with a little over a minute remaining in the second. Mire turned the tables on Morrow and took over and scored with a reversal. Morrow took back over with 13 seconds remaining in the second to take the 8-4 lead after two periods. With Morrow on the bottom in the third, it didn’t take long for Morrow to take two more points and control and outlasted the Kaplan opponent 10-4.

Calvary Cavaliers Wrestling Team

Also, in Division 3 the Calvary Cavaliers won’t be taking any wrestlers to the second day of the tournament but it was not from lack of trying. The young squad had two wrestlers that were one match short of performing on Saturday afternoon.

Dillon Creech, Calvary

Dillon Creech seeded No. 14 in the 145 Division of Division 3 came with a fight in him. He took the No. 3 Caden Gaudet with a record of 42-11 to a period and a half before giving up the pin. Sent over to the Consolation Bracket, Creech kept the fight going. He pinned Hunter Vice from Kaplan in the first round. Creech then faced his second top-six opponent in No. 4 Jace Jordan from Thomas Jefferson. The Cavalier pulled the upset with a pin midway through the third period. The Goliaths didn’t stop there as No. 1 seeded Andrew Lynch was his third round consolation opponent. Unphased by the ranking, Creech took control with a takedown with and a surprising 2-0 lead after the first period. Lynch went from defense to offense on Creech as he scored on a reversal to tie the match. Creech took back control with another reversal and regained the lead at 4-2. A final reversal by Lynch at the end of the period tied the match at 4-4. Creech started with control but Lynch took another reversal to take the lead. Lynch then got Creech on his back but not enough for a pin. Creech fell with a valiant 8-4 loss.

Mitchell Colgin, Calvary

Another Calvary wrestler that was one match away was freshman Mitchel Colgin. Colgin came in as the highest-ranked Cavalier at No. 7 in the 138 division for Division 3. Colgin made quick work of the Ethan Hoorman from Thomas Jefferson with a pin at 1:14 in the first round match. The Cavalier ran into the No. 2 seeded Zachary Lauland in the quarterfinals. Lauland pinned Colgin in the first minute. Moving to the consolation bracket didn’t phase the Cavalier wrestler, though. Colgin overpowered his South Beauregard opponent Alexander Laurent with a 19-4 domination and technical decision win. Once again, the Calvary wrestler ran into a top-three opponent. Colgin faced the No. 3 ranked Ethan Langley from Basile. Langley gained the up hand and tried to garner a pin but time ran out in the first period and took the 4-0 lead. Colgin pulled off a reversal early in the second to close the gap to 4-2. Langley took back control and almost took the pin again in the second period but time ran out again and took the 9-2 lead on Colgin. It over two periods, but Langley ended Colgin’s tournament with a pin early in the third period.

The Cavaliers young squad consisted of three freshmen and two sophomores. The experience gained in this tournament will strengthen them for next year.

As for Morrow, he will start the day tomorrow just one match away from competing for a state championship. He will have to start with a No. 6 Joseph Belcher who upset No. 3 Brusly’s Aaron Couty in the quarterfinals. The Summerfield Rebel has gotten close all year in competitions and brought home a lot of medals throughout the season. Tomorrow he can go for the gold and the moniker of State Champion.
