Trace Morrow was the lone wrestler from Summerfield to travel to Parkway High School on Friday and Saturday in Bossier City to compete in the Lone Survivor Tournament. Morrow walked away with a semi-final appearance in the 182 weight class and finished fourth overall in the 22 school event.

Morrow started the pool play on Friday afternoon with a 3-1 record in Pool A to give him a No. 3 seed heading into the Championship bracket starting on Friday. His only loss came at the hands of the David Bernard from Teurlings Catholic. Bernard would eventually become the runner up of the class. The sole Rebel started with a 13-0 major decision against Michael Salinas from Airline in the quarterfinals. Hunter Maudlin from Harrah, OK made quick work in the semi-finals with a pin in the first period. Maudlin would become the winner of the 182 class.

“My tournament has been pretty good,” Morrow said, “A lot of stuff that I worked on during break helped me in this tournament and kept me competitive.”

Morrow has traveled mainly in South Louisiana to compete since the closest competition from Summerfield is Northwest Louisiana. He’s started to make a name for himself last year as he placed 4th at the LHSAA State Wrestling Tournament. This year he has racked up third-place finishes at Warrior Open in Baton Rouge, Riot on The Red in Bossier City, and the Spartan Invitational in Gonzales. He’s also picked up a 5th place at the Big Horse tournament in Zachary.

Coach Chris Scroggs sees his weight class has become different and a lot more of a challenge than the pass. “His weight class is a lot different than it was last year,” Scroggs said. “It’s stronger than it was the last year. It’s not all in our division but who he’s wrestling within these tournaments. It’s a lot different.”

The trips and the competition will hopefully pay off in February when the LHSAA State Wrestling tournament comes around again in Bossier City.
