The Shreveport Mavericks are The Basketball League national champions with a 137-132 overtime victory over the Albany Patroons at the Washington Avenue Armory on Thursday night. The Pauls gave the Mavericks in closing seconds to send the game to overtime where Shreveport overcame Albany.
Big Paul Harrison mauled the scoreboard with 36 points and 9 rebounds. Harrison shot 15 for 23 (65 percent) from the field. Patrick Meyers added 28 points. For the second night in a row, Meyers had the hit hand shooting 11 for 14 (78 percent) from
the field. Paul Parks was right behind and had a double-double with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Parks also nailed 6 three-pointers. Jamal Montgomery had a big night with 18 points and 6 rebounds. Tyrone Jordan contributed 17 points and 6 rebounds.
Albany’s top scorer was AJ Mosby with 30 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists. Kameron Williams added 22 points along with 5 assists. BJ Glasford bucketed 20 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Trevis Wyche netted 19 points. Anthony Moe off the bench with 19 points and 5 rebounds. Jared Sam had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Sam also had 5 assists. Luther Page added 5 rebounds.
Albany took the early lead trading baskets with Shreveport at 10-5. Tyrone Jordan sparked Shreveport on a 10-2 with a three. Jordan added another basket to tie at 10-10. Moe tried to stop the run with a hook shot and regain the Patroon lead. Jordan struck again with another three. Two more free throws by Jordan give Shreveport the 15-12 lead with 5:33 remaining in the first. Shreveport maintained the lead to 23-19 until Moe hit beyond the arc and Page followed with a layup to give Albany the 24-23 lead with less than three minutes remaining. After a timeout, Jamal Montgomery hit the three with Big Paul Harrison scoring a layup to give the Mavericks the lead back once again at 28-24. Moe hit the final shot of the quarter with no time remaining as Shreveport had the 28-26 lead heading into the second quarter.
The two teams had three ties in the first half of the second quarter. After a timeout with a Maverick 37-36 lead. Patroons Moe popped a three followed by Glasford’s basket giving Albany the 41-37 lead. Shreveport tied the game at 41-41 after Parks’ basket and Cunningham’s free throws. Albany went on a 9-0 lead fueled by five points from Wyche, Moe’s hook shot, and emphasized by Page’s dunk. The Patroon jumped out to a 50-41 lead with four minutes left in the half. Shreveportfired back with a 10-2 run to get back within one point with two minutes remaining. Albany made another quick 5-0 run to push the lead up to 57-51 with 1:15 remaining. Shreveport cut the Patroon lead to 59-56 heading into halftime.
Albany maintained their three-point lead for the first three minutes. Harrison’s bucket followed by Meyers’s three-point shot gave the Mavericks the 72-71 lead. The back and forth continued through the third quarter. Albany had regained the lead at 82-81. Shreveport went on a 6-0 run behind a Harrison layup and two baskets by Parks to give the Mavericks an 88-83 lead with three minutes in the third. Albany closed out the third with a 5-0 run by Wyche to tie at 90-90.
Neither team could separate far from the other in the first three minutes. Albany finally pulled away with a 7-0 run backed by five points from Mosby and a layup by Glasford. The Patroon led 103-98 a little over seven minutes remaining. The lead was dropped by one with two minutes remaining in the final game. Albany was up 115-111. Harrison got the Mavs within two with a minute remaining. Mosby fired back with a three and a 118-113 lead with 1:07 left. Meyers’s jump shot drew the foul from Mosby to make it a three-point play. Albany is still up 118-116 with 58 seconds. Jordan drove the lane for a layup to tie the game at 118-118. Glasford gave the Patroon a two-point lead with 13 seconds remaining. Jordan lost the ball with three seconds left as Glasford stole the ball. Glasford goes for the layup as Paul Parks blocks the shot and gets the rebound. Timeout was called by the Mavericks with 3 seconds. Paul Harrison’s last chance shot falls and sends the game to overtime at 120-120.
Shreveport jumped out early in the extra frame as Harrison’s jump shot and Montgomery’s charity shot led Mavs to the early 123-120. Shreveport maintained the lead for the first three minutes in the overtime. Shreveport led 126-123 with 2:00 minutes left. The Mavericks extended the lead to six with 1:07 left at 131-125. Kameron William brought Albany back with a three-point shot with 47 seconds. Harrison answers with a layup within 30 seconds and the Mavericks are thirty seconds from a national title. JC Show is fouled and his free throws bring Albany back to a single three with 24 seconds. Shreveport up 133-130. Albany went to desperation fouls but Shreveport converted the charity shots into points and held.on to. take home the national championship.
