Round 1 of the LHSAA football playoffs was not kind to Northwest Louisiana schools as all but six teams got an early end to their season. Two of the District 1-A schools, Homer and Glenbrook, were the survivors. Fortunately, several teams had a first-round bye giving a fresh batch of teams for a championship run
Division III Nonselect
No. 11 South Plaquemines (9-2) v No. 6 Many (8-2)
The Many Tigers blew out the Springfield Bulldogs (4-7) 61-0 and will have a little bit more of a challenge with South Plaquemines. South Plaquemines shut down Port Barre 34-16 giving them their eighth consecutive win. Many have won 6 consecutive wins. Many are looking to make their fifth consecutive trip to the state championship.
No 18 Mansfield (6-5) at No. 2 Sterlington (9-1)
The Wolverines pulled off the upset over Marksville (5-6) with a late field goal. Will lightning strike twice against the No. 2 seed? They will be facing a Sterlington team coming off a full week of rest. The Panthers have also won nine consecutive games.
Division III Select
No. 15 Holy Savior Menard (8-3) at No. 2 Calvary (10-0)
The Cavaliers had a first-round bye but will now be looking to stay undefeated as they look to take down the District 4-2A champion Eagles. HSM eliminated Houma Christian 23-8 in the first round
Division IV Nonselect
No. 16 Franklin (6-5) at No. 1 Logansport (9-1)
The Tigers are coming off a week of rest and possibly a long stretch playing in Desoto Parish with their top seed. If no upsets occur, the Tigers could play in the semifinals. They are also on a 9 game streak. Hopefully the week off doesn’t harm their momentum against the Hornets.
No. 20 General Trass (6-5) at No. 4 Haynesville (9-1)
The Golden Tornado are looking to cause some havoc against the Panthers who knocked out Haynesville’s fellow district member Arcadia 22-6. Haynesville hopefully doesn’t hope this makes a second District 1-1A victim. One stat to point out is that 2A v 1A is currently 4-0. The District 1-A champs have taken care of a 3A opponent so the classification is no bother to them.
No. 10 Oakdale (8-3) at No. 7 Homer (8-3)
The Pels are looking at possibly their last home game of the season in their quest for a third consecutive trip to the state championship. Homer eliminated Delhi 28-8 but the Bears were closing in during the fourth quarter. The Pels defense will have to step up big time. Oakdale scored over 40 points in four of their wins.
Division IV Select
No. 11 Glenbrook (8-2) at No. 6 St. Mary’s (7-2)
The only matchup this weekend will be between two local teams. Glenbrook ended their season in Week 9 but the first round home a 49-12 win over Sacred Heart. St. Mary’s Tigers can show a week off doesn’t phase them as in their regular season bye they came back with a 42-0 win over LaSalle. The prize for the win in this game could be a trip to Monroe against the defending Division IV state champ Ouachita Christian. A game that the Apaches want revenge for last year’s quarterfinal loss.
