Two local teams will be heading to Hammond next week to compete in Marsh Madness.  There’s good news and bad news with this.  One of them will be in the Class C State Championship. The bad news one of them will be eliminated.  Gibsland-Coleman and Summerfield both qualify for Marsh Madness.  They will face each other on Monday afternoon At 4:30 at University Center in Hammond. 

No. 2 GIbsland-Coleman 53, No. 7 Atlanta 45

Gibsland-Coleman would have to contain Atlanta’s Princis Goff.  The idea: triple-team Goff.  Atlanta started fast and Goff put up all 6 of the Lady Bulldogs’ points.  Gibsland-Coleman got their act together and went on an 11-0 run behind Ke’Honesty Williams three and Samora Sampson scoring.  Baleigh Haulcy capped off the run with a rebound and put back.  Goff nailed a three to end the run.   Williams’s assist to Sampson followed by two on a steal by Sampson and another putback rebound shot by Haulcy that turned into a 3-point play gave GCHS another small 7-0 run.  Goff ended the quarter with a made shot in the lane followed by a free throw to close with Gibsland-Coleman up 21-12 after the first quarter.  Goff started drawing the fouls in the lane and slowly bringing Atlanta back into the game.  Fierce defense by the Atlanta forward brought the score to within 4 points.   Sampson and Williams pushed another 6-point run to get to 31-21 do Gibsland-Coleman.   Gibsland-Coleman took a 31-23 into halftime.  Third-quarter, scoring was slim for the Gib Lady Bulldogs as Sampson scored all 7 points. Gibsland-Coleman’s defense held Goff to only 3 points but Pretiuna Sapp helped close the gap for Atlanta to 38-33 at the end of the third quarter.   Atlanta continued to chip away at the lead.  With 6:40 left,  Gibsland-Coleman was called for an intentional foul and Goff nailed both free throws.  A put-back rebound by Goff and Atlanta was within 40-39.  A shot by Aaniyah Herbert and the AHS Bulldogs had their first lead at 41-40 with 5:17 left.  GCHS called timeout.  Williams found Haulcy under the goal to regain the lead at 42-41.   Atlanta retook the lead with another shot.  Gibsland attempted multiple threes but none would fall.  Williams drew the foul driving the lane and hit both free throws to retake the lead at 44-43.  An attempted steal by Durham hit the Atlanta leg out of bounds.  Destiny Hardy found Haulcy on the inbound to expand the lead to 46-43 with 3:19 remaining.   Foul shots would not fall for either team.   Williams and Durham both received their fourth foul with less than 3 minutes remaining.   Goff closed the gap to one with a shot under the goal with 1:53 left.   Williams connected with Durham under the goal and pushed back to a three-point lead.  Sampson made a steal and was fouled.  Sampson hit both free throws to give GCHS the 50-45 lead with 1:22.  The GCHS Lady Bulldogs went to a 2-3 zone and shut down the lane and held on for the win.   Samora Sampson scored 27 for Gibsland-Coleman.  Ke’Honesty Williams added 11 for GCHS.  Princis Goff scored 27 for Atlanta.  Prentiuna Sapp netted 12 for AHS.

No. 3 Summerfield 45, No. 6 Reeves 42

The Lady Rebels secured their ticket to Hammond by edging out Reeves Lady Raider at home on Thursday evening.  Malaysia Tate and Alaysia Combs both scored 18 for the win.  

Class A

No. 1 Northwood-Lena 53, No. 9 Homer 23

The Lady Gators took a win for the second straight round over a District 1-A opponent at home.   Homer’s Z’Riah Buggs scored the lone free throw in the first quarter as Northwood-Lena took an 11-1 lead after the first quarter.  Kerston score the only field goal against the 1-loss Lady Gators in the second as Northwood-Lena took a 27-4 lead at halftime.  Northwood-Lena stayed in control in the second half.  Jamyra Williams led the Lady Pels with 11 points. 

No. 4 Merryville 49, No. 5 Arcadia 46

The Lady Hornets streak was finally broken but it didn’t come easily.  Teairia Adams had 6 points in the first quarter to give Arcadia the 14-12 lead after one period.  Defense prevailed in the second as the Lady Panther caught Arcadia and the two into halftime tied 21-21.  Jay Haulcy opened up in the third with 6 points and Arcadia took a 35-30 heading into the final period.  Sam Johnson for Merryville got hot in the fourth burying 10 points and pushing the Lady Panthers past Arcadia.  Jay Haulcy finished with 14 points.   Teairia Adams netted 10.
