]]>The Zwolle Hawks are the Division V back-to-back state champions with a 45-41 win over No. 2 Anacoco Indians. Though trophies back to Sabine Parish are not uncommon, this one will hold special. The Hawks claimed their 17th state title allowing them to surpass Southern Lab as the team with the most state titles by a school. The Hawks will also be the only Division V Nonselect State Champions as Class B and C will split back into their respective classes and combine the Non-select and Select titles. This was the Hawks’ 7th of the past 9 state title appearances. The MVP for the Hawks was Howard Etheridge with 13 points. Preston Sanders contributed a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Alec Williams also popped 12 points. “Feels great,” Zwolle head coach Bradley Lauren said in the post-game news conference provided by LHSAA Network. “We talk about this all the time talking about winning the state championship and we just had this conversation in the locker room. Coach Palmer said we have a chance to make history. Palmer said,’ What to be the first back-to-back since 2012?’. Howard Etheridge responded ‘No, 17 state championships.’. That’s what it means to us.”. Zwolle reached the state title game with the fifth matchup of the season against No. 4 Negreet Indians. The pair had split the series 2-2 before the Hawks punched a ticket to the state championship in the 61-51 win. Negreet had given the Hawks two of their three losses on the season.
Two other teams competed for state titles and headed back home as state runner-ups.
Lakeview Gator reached the Division IV Nonselect finals but ran into a Franklin team with destiny on their side falling 50-45 in the loss. Franklin Hornets won their first state title since 1958. The Hornets fell in the finals last season to North Central. The Gators fell victim to the Franklin in ‘23 in the quarterfinals. Lakeview advanced to the finals with a semifinal 54-26 win over Pickering. Andre Sowell scored 16 and Dareon Joseph added 15 in the win over the Red Devils. Lakeview’s last championship appearance was in 2015 and its only title came in 2003.
Red River Bulldogs made a Cinderella run as the No. 13 seed to the Division III Nonselect state championship. The Bulldogs advanced to the state championship after eliminating No. 8 Donaldsonville 54-45 in the semifinals. The highest seed among the final four was No. 6 Marksville. No. 6 Marksville won their semifinal matchup 60-52 over No. 7 Richwood. The Marksville Tigers broke the glass slipper for the Bulldogs as they claimed the school’s first boys’ basketball title in the 67-59 win. The Tigers last basketball state championship came from a three-peat by the Lady Tigers from 1915-1917.
Four local teams came up short in the semifinals. Ringgold fell to eventual state champion Franklin 63-61 in the Division IV semifinal. The Redskins made their first appearance since 2005. J’bari Adams led Ringgold with 22 points. Jordyn Wilson contributed 15. AnTravion Kinsey knocked down 10 points. Third time was not a. harm for the Lincoln Prep as they reached the semifinals but came short 62-55 against eventual state champion Crescent City. Steven Burks III finished with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Devin Burton added 12 points and 10 rebounds. As mentioned before, Negreet came up short against Zwolle. Gibsland-Coleman was the third of four local teams in Division V. The Bulldogs made their third consecutive appearance in Marsh Madness and was the only Class C school to reach Marsh Madness in Division V. The Bulldogs fell 50-41 to the Anacoco Indians.

]]>The post High School Baseball Report – Week 1 & 2 appeared first on Under The Radar - NW Louisiana.
]]>Baseball season is upon us and the first two weeks are already in the books. Big story so far is that Red River Bulldogs are undefeated and holding tight. The progress shows in individual stories as three made the Hot 9 and Next 9 for the first week and at least one pitcher has been in the Top 3 Rotation. Repeat appearances in the Week 1 & 2 Hot 9 are Hayden Rabo from Simsboro. Red River’s Ashton Hester has appeared in both the Top 3 pitching performances so far this season.
Teams are piling in the games as there has been some weekend tournaments that have helped push some performances.
Hopefully, the next reports will only be one week. Stay tuned to Under The Radar NWLA for the latest baseball. Also, download the Under The Radar NWLA app for both iPhone and Android.

]]>The quarter-finals are over and seven local teams are headed to Burton Coliseum at McNeese State In Lake Charles. You have the range of teams returning to the state semifinals.
Zwolle will be attempting to break the tie with Southern Lab on most state titles by a school. If the Hawks win the state championship, they will win their 17th title. The defending state champions in Division will face district rival Negreet who stopped the Hawks from winning an outright district title. Both teams are heading into the finals with 31-3 records. The closest the Indians have reached the final four since 2003 was the quarterfinals in 2004. Negreet last won a state title in 1972.
Red River Bulldogs are one of two No. 13 seeds to head to Marsh Madness. No. 13 Episcopal is the other team in Division III Select. The Bulldogs return to Marsh Madness for the first time since 2020. Red River has been to two state title games in 2003 and 2006 where they were state runner-up. The last titles in Red River Parish were Coushatta in 1994 and Hall Summit in 1994.
Speaking of 2003, the opponent that defeated Red River was Lakeview. The No. 1 seeded Gators are on their way to Marsh Madness after a year’s absence. Lakeview has been the last four out of five years to Marsh Madness but no titles yet. When was the last title for the Gators…2003.
Ringgold is long overdue for a state championship. The last title for the Redskins is in 1961. Ringgold has a 3-0 record in state championship matchups.
Fellow Bienville Parish team, Gibsland-Coleman Bulldogs are making their fourth consecutive trip to Marsh Madness. The Bulldogs are and will be the only Class C team to make the Marsh Madness since the Division V Nonselect playoffs have been for the last two years. This will be the last year of Division V playoffs. Select and Nonselect will combine for Division V schools and they divide playoffs back under Class B and C.
State runner-up Lincoln Parish returns to Marsh Madness for the third consecutive year. This is the fourth out of five years that the Panthers have been to semis. The Panthers have two runner-ups from 2020 and 2023. The former Grambling Lab where Lincoln Prep originated won the last title in 1992.
Stay tuned to Under The Radar NWLA for the boys’ state semifinals in Lake Charles.

]]>Call it Lucky Number 7 title as the Arcadia Lady Hornets (32-3) got revenge for last year’s elimination in the last second by Oakdale last season in the semifa. The Lady Hornets won 48-32 in the 2024 rematch in the Division IV Nonselect State Championship. This was their first title since 2016.
The Lady Hornets’ dominance in the paint and on second-chance points gained them their seventh title. Arcadia outscore Oakdale 24-12 in the paint and 23-8 on second chance points.
Arcadia made sure they were going home with some hardware as they controlled the lead 28 of the 32 minutes.
Arcadia was led by Justice Young who was a beast under the boards scoring 16 points and snagging 19 rebounds. Arianna Williams also had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Rhyanna Abbey added 8 for the Lady Hornets. DeAsia Alexander was the defensive machine for Arcadia with 11 rebound (8 defensive) and swatting away the competition with 8 blocks and contributing 4 points. Ja’Kyria Cockerham and Jayla Mendenhall each added 4 points.
Oakdale was led by Akeelah Hobson who scored 15 points.
The two stayed tight in the first quarter with Arcadia leading 10-7. Oakdale closed the gap to 20-18 by halftime. Arcadia defense kicked in high gear in the thir quarter as Oakdale only managed one field goal. The Lady Hornets headed into the final quarter up 33-22. Arcadia was going to ensure that a squeaker wasn’t going to stop them for a state title as they outscored the Lady Warriors 15-10 on to the 48-32 victory.

]]>The second Round is in the books and 11 teams remain in the hunt for a state championship run. Red and Winnfield advanced to the quarterfinals for Division III nonselect. The top 2 teams in Division IV, No. 1 Lakeview and No. 2 Ringgold, look to be on a state championship collision. Five of the seven teams from Division V Nonselect playoffs advanced. In the Select division, only two teams remain. Unfortunately, Lincoln Prep and St. Mary’s will compete against each other in the quarterfinals to send the sole Select representative from class 2A-C. One matchup in Nonselect between local teams will have Simsboro traveling to Zwolle in Division V
Looking ahead to the quarterfinals, Gibsland-Coleman wi inherit the longest road trip heading down south to Lacassine. Also interesting matchup will have Pleasant Hill’s head coach Randy Carlisle face his old team in Anacoco. A win by Zwolle and Negreet will have the two district rivals meet in Lake Charles.
Check back with UTRNWLA to find out the quarterfinal results and who made it to Marsh Madness in Lake Charles.

]]>Arcadia and Lakeview are the two remaining school from Northwest Louisiana from 2A-C. The good news, we will have one representative from Northwest Louisiana in a state championship. The bad news is we will only have one representative in a state championship. With Arcadia and Lakeview advancing to Hammond in a strange twist of fate the two will face each other in the Division IV Nonselect semifinals.
Castor, Cedar Creek, and Mansfield were eliminated on Thursday night. All three faced the one of the top 3 teams in their respective divisions. The Castor Lady Tigers first trip to quarterfinals since 2014 ended in Vernon Parish at Anacoco. Cedar Creek road to the quarterfinal sent them to Baton Rouge to face No. 1 Southern Lab. Mansfield was eliminated at Amite who will be making their fourth consecutive trip to Hammond.

]]>It’s the final week of the regular season where coaches and assistant coaches check the speed of the Earth and calculate the angle of shadow that falls off the side of their gym. Along with migration of the wildebeest in the Sahara Desert and compare how close spring is in North Louisiana versus the Upper Peninsula in Michigan. It’s power point grab week. Coaches stay tuned to the power rankings and see if they can improve their playoff positioning or even get into the playoffs.
Castor did their bidding and had scheduled Cedar Creek and Many helping them boost their position to the Top 28 and a playoff spot in Division V Select
This time also produces some good games like powerhouses Calvary and Bossier matching up and getting a full gym for one final regular season hoorah. Lakeview took on local big boys Ruston and almost knocked them off. Doyline took 26-win Georgetown for their homecoming game.
Brackets are out but we wanted to celebrate the last week of the season. Look for the playoff action on Under The Radar NWLA.

]]>Five local schools remain in the LHSAA girls basketball playoffs as they head into the Quarterfinals. Arcadia defeated local team Logansport to advance. DeAsia Alexander and DeAsia Alexander had strong performances despite Lanetta Hill pocketing 19 for Logansport. Another matchup of local teams saw the Castor Lady Tiger advance to the quarters over Summerfield on Monday night. If the Lakeview Lady Gators continue to dominate the playoffs as they have over West St John and Merryville, a win over LaSalle will push them into a Marsh Madness matchup with Arcadia.
Cedar Creek pulled the road win over St. Martin Episcopal and has No. 1 Southern Lab awaiting them in Baton Rouge. Cedar Creek is the lone Select local team remaining.
Teams that exited the second round were Logansport, Homer, Gibsland-Coleman, Negreet, Quitman, Summerfield, Pleasant Hill, Calvary, and Lincoln Prep
Quarterfinals are the final step before Marsh Madness in Hammond. The quarterfinals will be played on Thursday night.
