]]>Eighteen seconds. What’s the question? How long did Calvary have the lead in the Division III Select State Championship? The Cavaliers (13-0) won the 34-28 state championship over the St. Charles Comets (12-1) on Saturday in Caesar’s Superdome. This is the fourth title for Calvary and second for head coach Rodney Guin. This was Guin’s first chance to compete for a state championship in the Superdome. Guin’s last championship with the Cavaliers was won at Northwestern State University in 2020. The win also stopped the Comets from claiming a third consecutive state championship.
The Cavaliers claimed the title on the back of James Simon who had 30 carries for 190 yards and three touchdowns Abram Wardell passed 23-for-32 for 230 yards and two touchdowns and one interception. Aubrey Hermes was the top target with 7 receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown. Kolby Thomas also had a touchdown reception in the closing seconds.
St. Charles Catholic Jeremiah Wills had 11 carries for 71 yards and two rushing touchdowns. Brady St. Pierre was 7-for-11 for 147 yards and had a hand in two touchdowns for the Comets. Daniel Joseph was on the receiving end of two touchdowns from St. Pierre. Joseph had 3 catches for 85 yards.
The Comets got the only score in the first quarter with a 68-yard touchdown pass from St. Pierre to Joseph. The Cavaliers were knocking on the door to the end zone on then1 when time ran out in the first quarter as St. Charles Catholic was up 7-0 at the end of the quarter.
The first play of the second quarter sees Simon head into the end zone. The extra point was missed as St. Charles led 7-6. The big play Comets strike again on the next drive as Wills bolts for the end zone on a 46-yard touchdown. The Cavalier lost the ball for the second time on loss of downs. Calvary’s defense snaps back the ball after Cole Miller recovers a fumble midfield. Calvary tried to stay on and closed the gap after Simon scored on a 3-yard run and closed in 14-13. It was too close for comfort for the Comets. Brayden Betucci snags an interception and sets up another score for the Comets on a 14-yard touchdown pass to and gives the Comets the 28-13 halftime head:
Calvary goes three and out then their punt is muffed but St. Charles Catholic takes over in Cavalier territory. St. Charles Catholic finally broke the cycle of punts as Wills scored on a 3-yard run to widen the lead to 28-13. Calvary went on an 11-play drive that resulted in a 25-yard touchdown run. St. Charles up 28-19 after three quarters.
Calvary’s bad luck seemed to follow them into the fourth as the Cavaliers started at their own 3 and then had to punt. St. Charles marched down to the red zone where the Cavalier defense forced the Comets to kick a field goal that was missed. With 4:20 remaining, Wardell completed 5 of 6 passes and Simon added an 18-yard run. Wardell struck Hermes on a 20-yard touchdown pass. The Cavalier converted the two-point conversion and closed in 28-26. Hoping for one more drive, the Cavaliers burned through all three timeouts. The Comets reached midfield and were held to a 4th-and-1. A first down wrapped up the game for the Comets. Roman McMillan had St. Pierre around the waist and gave Calvary one last shot with 44 seconds remaining. Wardell hit Kolby Thompson on a 17-yard reception. Wardell had to scramble for a first down. With 18 seconds remaining, Wardell connected with Thomas on a 20-yard touchdown pass. Calvary took their first and final lead at 34-28. St Charles tried one last gasp on a hook and ladder play but a miscue had the ball dropped and picked up by Hutch Grace locking in the state championship.

]]>Oak Grove claimed their eighth state title in history and for the second year in a row against a Claiborne Parish team. Oak Grove, a 2A school, outscored the Haynesville Golden Tornado in a 62-36 championship game. The game was the sixth-highest-scoring game in the LHSAA championships. Oak Grove was the only two blemishes on the Haynesville 12-2 record.
The offensive yards were not widely varied between the two teams as Oak Grove had 404 yards to Haynesville’s 375. Hayneville struggled on the third down conversion going 0-for-6 and just downright bad luck on some opportunities.
Take nothing away from the Tigers. Louisiana Tech commit Jackson Bradley had 21 carries for 188 yards and three touchdowns and Jay Freeman backed him up with 24 carries with 177 yards and also three touchdowns causing havoc for the Golden Tornado. Oak Grove also received touchdowns from Madox Hurley and a kickoff return touchdown from Tamarques Pritchard.
Haynesville’s Isaiah Washington was 5-for-19 for 115 yards a touchdown and two interceptions. Washington also had 8 carries for 64 yards and two touchdowns. JerMarquis Hampton was the top target with 2 receptions for two touchdowns. Hampton also had a touchdown reception from Tra Brooks. Byruss Burns was the top rusher with 4 carries for 91 yards and a touchdown.
The first quarter saw a quick score from Oak Grove with a 29-yard bolt downfield to give the early lead. Haynesville matched the score Washington connected with Hampton on a 53-yard touchdown reception. The Tigers didn’t allow much celebration as Pritchard returned the kickoff for an 84-yard touchdown. This opened the nightmare first quarter for the Golden Tornado. Haynesville looked to be making momentum as Alonzo Jackson reached a first down on a third down conversion. The call went for review and the call was called as it ruled a stripped ball by Spencer Foster. Oak Grove marched downfield and finished the drive on a 6-yard run by Freeman. Haynesville had to punt on the next possession and the deepest field position of the Tigers yet for the night was not enough as Bradley jetted the quarterback keeper for 74 yards for a touchdown. Oak Grove was up 28-7 by the end of the first quarter.
The woes continued for Haynesville in the second quarter. Another three-and-out for Haynesville resulted in midfield position again for Oak Grove. A 9-play almost four-minute drive resulted in a 2-yard run touchdown by Freeman. Haynesville’s first play after the touchdown saw an interception by James Harris that reached the Haynesville 9. Bradley reached the end zone again on a 6-yard run and a 41-7 lead with 6:53 left in the second quarter. Haynesville finally caught a break when Byruss Burns broke through for a 68-yard touchdown run. Oak Grove had the 41-15 halftime lead.
Haynesville came out of the locker room with some spark. The Golden Tornado continued to struggle with the third down conversions. Oak Grove couldn’t capitalize though as a 31-yard field goal was missed. Haynesville’s defense sparked some hope as Damondra Martin intercepted Bradley’s pass. Washington took the Golden Tornado to the end zone on the 12-yard keeper. Haynesville had closed the gap to 41-23 late in the third quarter. Not to be outdone, Oak Grove’s Freeman broke away on a 31-yard run and closed out the third quarter up 48-23.
Oak Grove was catching the breaks again in the fourth quarter as Pritchard snagged an interception. The Tigers reached the red zone to the Haynesville 12 facing a 4th and 1. The Tigers go for a quarterback push for the first down and the ball became loose and was batted to the end zone by a Haynesville player only to be recovered by Freeman in the end zone and once pushed the lead to over 20 points. Haynesville looked to stay alive as Alonzo Jackson made a pass that looked to be a touchdown but instant replay ruled him dead on the Oak Grove 1. Washington finished the drive with a 1-yard run. Freeman made a three-play 53-yard run to only allow senior Hurley to make a state championship memory with a 1-yard touchdown. A little of the Golden Tornado’s future was able to be seen as Hampton scored his second touchdown but from a pass by freshman Tra Brooks.

]]>The post …And Then There Were Three…LHSAA Football Semifinals appeared first on Under The Radar - NW Louisiana.
]]>One thing is for sure. Northwest Louisiana will have at least one team in the state championship in New Orleans. Three teams in Class 1A and 2A wil be competing in state semifinals. Class 4A North Desoto will also be making an attempt at a return to the state championship with a matchup against Opelousas.
In Select Division III, Calvary Cavaliers (12-0) will be putting their undefeated record on the line with a home semifinal matchup with Isidore Newman (11-1). The Cavalier demolished Parkview Baptist last week in the quarterfinals. Running back James Simon broke a schoolrecord with 345 yards. The Cavaliers are looking for their fourth title.
It has to come down to two northwest Louisiana Nonselect Division IV semifinals. No. 4 Haynesville (11-1) will have to travel to No. 1 Logansport (11-1). Logansport’s only loss has been to Calvary and they have rattled off 11 straight wins from then. Haynesville has also had a loss from a team in the semifinals, defending state champion Oak Grove. Logansport took care of business last week over Welsh. Haynesville played their last home game of the season eliminating Jeanerette. Haynesville will be looking for their 27th trip to the state championship. Logansport is hoping they have better luck against the other Claiborne Parish team as Homer has defeated them the past two seasons with the older game being the 2021 state championship.
The LHSAA state championships will be played next week from Dec 7-9 at the Caesar’s Superdome in New Orleans.
The post …And Then There Were Three…LHSAA Football Semifinals appeared first on Under The Radar - NW Louisiana.
]]>The post Six Local Teams Headed To Quarterfinals appeared first on Under The Radar - NW Louisiana.
]]>And then there were six…it’s time for some local teams to take a turkey leg in tow to practice. Thanksgiving week is the celebration time for the LHSAA quarterfinals.
Six local teams have celebrated advancing to the elite eight of each division. Outside of the 2A-A range of schools in Northwest Louisiana, only Ruston, Airline, and North Desoto remain.
Division III Nonselect
No. 6 Many (10-2) at No. 3 St. James (9-2)
The Many Tigers are still on the path to a fifth consecutive state championship and a repeat of champions. St. James Wildcats are not unfamiliar with the striped cats as they faced each other in the Division III Nonselect semifinals last season. The Tigers have outscored their two playoff opponents 106-0. St. James eliminated North Webster last week 42-12. Can the Tigers do it on the road?
Division III Select
No. 10 Parkview Baptist (10-2) at No. 2 Calvary Baptist (11-0)
The Cavaliers weren’t able to avenge their 2022 quarterfinal exit as Parkview Baptist upset Dunham in the second round. Dunham should have watched out because that’s how the Eagles advanced to the quarterfinals last season. The Cavaliers are looking to not make the same exit as last year in the quarterfinals
Division IV Select
No. 8 Welsh (9-3) at No. 1 Logansport (10-1)
You get the No.1 seed and have a huge target on your back. The Tigers are currently on a 10-game win streak with the only blemish on their record being from undefeated Calvary. The 2A Greyhounds are making their first quarterfinal appearance since 2018 where they reached the state championship and fell to Amite.
No. 5 Jeanerette (9-2) at No. 4 Haynesville (10-1)
Jeanerette has the longest span of reaching the quarterfinals in the state short of Walker who has never been to a quarterfinal according to GeauxPreps.com. The Tigers’ last time they went to the quarterfinals was 1990 (33 years ago). The Tigers have never been to a state championship and will have to take on a Haynesville team that is looking for its 18th state title. The drought for the Golden Tornado has been 9 years in 2014 was the last title.
No. 7 Homer (9-3) at No. 2 Kentwood (9-2)
Homer’s road to a third consecutive state championship just got to be a climb on a bumpy road. Short of playing at SuperDome, Homer will play their first road playoff game since 2021 where they had to travel to White Castle en route to the state championship. The Kangaroos also were eliminated in the quarterfinals by eventual state champion Oak Grove.
Division IV
No. 6 St. Mary’s (8-2) at No. 3 Ouachita Christian (10-1)
The Tigers are going to have to go through the defending state champion Eagles in order to reach the semifinals. The last time the Tigers reached the semis was in 2017. Ouachita Christian has not lost to a Louisiana team this season. The only loss came from Harding Academy in Arkansas.

]]>The second draft of the 2024-2026 redistricting plan was released by the LHSAA on Tuesday morning according to Geaux Preps.com. The second round of planning showed the majority staying the same but a few slight changes.
The final district plans for Cross Country for Division III,IV and V, boys golf for Division III and IV, girls golf Division II, boys and girls soccer for Division III and IV, tennis Division III and IV, and volleyball for Division IV and V. This means that these are set for approval by the Executive Board and will be the official district for 2024-26 once finalized.
Class B & C local districts did not change.
District 1-A and 3-A made a slight change moving Ringgold back to District 1-A from 3-A. They will return with Haynesville, Homer, Glenbrook, Arcadia, Plain Dealing, Cedar Creek, and Lincoln Prep. District 3-A will have Lakeview, LaSalle, Logansport, Montgomery, Northwood-Lena, and St. Mary’s
Class 2A locally had one change as Lakeside moved into District 3-2A with Winnfield, Many, Mansfield, and Red River. District 1-2A will now be Calvary Baptist, D’Arbonne Woods, Green Oaks, Homer, Magnolia SOE, North Caddo, and Union Parish
Schools will now have until November 27 to make appeals about their place in the second draft of the districts. The third and final district committee meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 29.

]]>Round 1 of the LHSAA football playoffs was not kind to Northwest Louisiana schools as all but six teams got an early end to their season. Two of the District 1-A schools, Homer and Glenbrook, were the survivors. Fortunately, several teams had a first-round bye giving a fresh batch of teams for a championship run
Division III Nonselect
No. 11 South Plaquemines (9-2) v No. 6 Many (8-2)
The Many Tigers blew out the Springfield Bulldogs (4-7) 61-0 and will have a little bit more of a challenge with South Plaquemines. South Plaquemines shut down Port Barre 34-16 giving them their eighth consecutive win. Many have won 6 consecutive wins. Many are looking to make their fifth consecutive trip to the state championship.
No 18 Mansfield (6-5) at No. 2 Sterlington (9-1)
The Wolverines pulled off the upset over Marksville (5-6) with a late field goal. Will lightning strike twice against the No. 2 seed? They will be facing a Sterlington team coming off a full week of rest. The Panthers have also won nine consecutive games.
Division III Select
No. 15 Holy Savior Menard (8-3) at No. 2 Calvary (10-0)
The Cavaliers had a first-round bye but will now be looking to stay undefeated as they look to take down the District 4-2A champion Eagles. HSM eliminated Houma Christian 23-8 in the first round
Division IV Nonselect
No. 16 Franklin (6-5) at No. 1 Logansport (9-1)
The Tigers are coming off a week of rest and possibly a long stretch playing in Desoto Parish with their top seed. If no upsets occur, the Tigers could play in the semifinals. They are also on a 9 game streak. Hopefully the week off doesn’t harm their momentum against the Hornets.
No. 20 General Trass (6-5) at No. 4 Haynesville (9-1)
The Golden Tornado are looking to cause some havoc against the Panthers who knocked out Haynesville’s fellow district member Arcadia 22-6. Haynesville hopefully doesn’t hope this makes a second District 1-1A victim. One stat to point out is that 2A v 1A is currently 4-0. The District 1-A champs have taken care of a 3A opponent so the classification is no bother to them.
No. 10 Oakdale (8-3) at No. 7 Homer (8-3)
The Pels are looking at possibly their last home game of the season in their quest for a third consecutive trip to the state championship. Homer eliminated Delhi 28-8 but the Bears were closing in during the fourth quarter. The Pels defense will have to step up big time. Oakdale scored over 40 points in four of their wins.
Division IV Select
No. 11 Glenbrook (8-2) at No. 6 St. Mary’s (7-2)
The only matchup this weekend will be between two local teams. Glenbrook ended their season in Week 9 but the first round home a 49-12 win over Sacred Heart. St. Mary’s Tigers can show a week off doesn’t phase them as in their regular season bye they came back with a 42-0 win over LaSalle. The prize for the win in this game could be a trip to Monroe against the defending Division IV state champ Ouachita Christian. A game that the Apaches want revenge for last year’s quarterfinal loss.

]]>The LHSAA released the 2023 playoff brackets on Sunday morning and 15 local teams covered by Under The Radar NWLA are headed to the second season.
The Nonselect teams have a 28-team bracket while Select will have a 24-team bracket.
Three teams qualified for first-round boys with Logansport taking the top-seed in the Division IV Nonselect bracket.
Division III Non-Select Bracket
Three District 3-2A opponents reached the Division III Non-Select bracket and all three are on the same side of the bracket. Mansfield and Red River have the opportunity to run into each other in the quarterfinals if both teams make it that far.
Defending state champion and current district 3-2A champ Many grabbed the No. 6 seed and could have a first and second-round playoff matchup if the game finishes according to seed. The Many Tigers (8-2) will host the Springfield Bulldogs (4-6) out of District 2A-7. The Bulldogs have currently been on a 5-game slide.
No.18 Mansfield (5-5) has been on a 4-game winning streak and will have to head on the road to central Louisiana to face 3A Marksville (5-5). A win by the Wolverines and they will be on the road to No. 2 Sterlington (9-1) who will have a week’s rest after a first-round bye.
No. 26 Red River Bulldog’s (3-7) playoff hopes looked grim at the beginning of the season starting 0-5. A three-game surge and the Bulldogs boosted their chances. The wins were enough to give them a coveted top 28 slot and go on the road to the Florida parishes to face No. 7 Pine Raiders (8-2).
Division III Select Bracket
The District 1-2A champs Calvary Cavaliers (10-0) finished undefeated but received the No. 2 seed. St. Charles Catholic Comets (10-0) grabbed the top seed finishing just 0.09 points ahead of Calvary. The Cavaliers will get a rest in the first round and host the winner of the No. 15 Holy Savior Menard (7-3) and No. 18 Houma Christian (7-3)
No. 16 Loyola Prep Flyers (4-6) mid-season run was enough to garner a first-round home matchup against No. 17 Ascension Episcopal (6-4). The Gators have won the last four of six games and lost a heartbreaker 44-43 game to Franklin in its last game. A win by the Flyers and they will head to LaPlace to take on top-seeded St. Charles.
Green Oaks (3-7) grabbed hold of the last, 24th slot in Division III Select. The Giants won two of their last three games over North Caddo and Lakeside to reach the postseason. They will travel to the Lake Charles area to face No. 9 Notre Dame Pioneers (7-3).
Division IV Non-Select Bracket
The Logansport Tigers (9-1) snagged the No.1 seed in the Divison IV Non-select bracket. The District 3-1A champs have won nine consecutive since their opening season loss to undefeated Calvary. The Tigers had three shutouts and five games where they held opponents to 6 points or less. Logansport will get the winner of the No. 16 Franklin (5-5) and No. 17 Grand Lake (6-4). Both opponents are Class 2A.
Haynesville (9-1) won the battle of Claiborne Parish and captured the District 1-1A title in the process. The Golden Tornado will have a first-round bye with its No.4 seed. A second-round home game could be a second go-round with district rival No.13 Arcadia (7-3).
The Arcadia Hornets will have a first-round home game against the No. 20 General Trass Panthers (5-5). The Lake Providence-based Panthers scored 40 points plus in all their wins short of the forfeit win against Magnolia School of Excellence.
No.7 Homer (7-3) will look to make a third consecutive trip to the Dome and could start with back-to-back home playoff games. The Pelicans will start with No.26 Delhi (5-5) at The Nest. The three losses by the Pelicans came from teams with a combined record of 24-6. The two Lousiana teams, Haynesville and Union Parish both received byes in the first round of playoffs.
Jonesboro-Hodge (4-6) won its last two games and took a No.18 seed. The Tigers will have to be on the road for possibly the first two rounds. Jonesboro-Hodge will head to the Mississippi River and face Ferriday (4-6). The Bulldogs have been on a four-game slide. A win by the Tigers and they will head south to take on perennial powerhouse No. 2 Kentwood (8-2).
The Lakeview Gators’ (3-7) early 3-game streak carried through to a No. 27 seed. The Gators are
making the playoffs under new head coach Andy Boone and the first time since 2020. Lakeview will take on the Mangham Dragons (6-4).
Division IV Select
No. 6 St. Mary’s Tigers (8-2) collect a first round bye in the Division IV Select Playoffs. The District 3-1A runner-up took may get to face a local team in No.11 Glenbrook Apaches (6-3) come to Natchitoches. Glenbrook will hosts Ville Plate based No. 22 Sacred Heart Trojans (3-7) in Minden. Sacred Heart has lost the lost six out of seven games.
Cedar Creek (4-5) will have to travel to Pointe Coupee and take on the Catholic-Pointe Coupee Hornets (7-3). The Cougars delivered three shutouts over the regular season
