Castor’s Emma Guice Letting It Fly At BPCC - Under The Radar - NW Louisiana

BPCC track and field are going to get a little growl with the Lady Tiger coming to their track and field squad in Bossier City.   The defending state runner-up in the shot put and defending state champ in the discus will be showing her skills for the Bossier Parish school.

Guice signed with the Lady Cavaliers track and field team at Castor School on Sunday, May 30.  “I’m excited, ” Guice said. “I’m going to be studying nursing.  I’m ready to get started with them.  The head coach told me that the throwing coach is excited about me and I’m ready to start working.”

Emma Guice is a multi-sport athlete for Castor.   She was the only senior on the young basketball squad.  The senior grabbed second-team honors.   She also has played some softball for the Lady Tigers.  She is known for her dedication and work ethic.

“Emma is an outstanding kid all around, ” Castor girl track coach Brandi Martin said. “She’s great in the classroom.  She’s one of the hardest workers you’ll have.  She wants to do everything the right way to the best of her ability.  She makes your program better.  We’re excited that she is going to get to move on.”  Martin has coached her since middle school.  She knew with her drive the rewards would come.  “It’s that work ethic, ”  Martin said.  “She wants to learn it the right way.  She’s going to put up a video of herself throwing and then analyze it and talk to you about it.  She gonna say what can I do to make this better.  She just puts in the time.  We saw a lot of power from her in the shot and technically pretty good and thought it would translate over to discus.”

Coach Steven Cortez continued to laud praise for Guice.  “She is the ideal coachable athlete, ” Cortez said.  “She’s going to want to do it right and she’s going to want to know what she’s doing wrong to fix it.  She’s going to get out there on her own to fix it. “  Normally, the transition between basketball and track the athletes are given a couple of days break. Not Emma, she was ready to go.

The Lady Tiger has had an impressive run for Castor in track.  In 2018, she was district runner-up in the shot put.  2019 saw her bring her dominance to the shot put as she collected four first places during the track season including a district championship and a regional championship.  She received a state runner-up in the Class B state championship.  She had to wait another year due to COVID-19 to compete. 2021 saw the senior dominate the shot competition again. First place in every track competition including another district championship and a regional championship.  Guice was a clear favorite for the state championship for the shot competition. Her nearest competition had a little under 2 feet shorter.  The elusive state championship in the shot put had passed her up by 0.9 meters.  Once again she was the state runner-up in Class B.  “It was shocking,”  Guice said. “I lost by 3 1/2 inches in the shot.  I was down on myself.  I went to Coach Cortez and Coach Martin and I started bawling.  That was the thing I was supposed to win.

Guice though had another option in 2021.  The Lady Tiger had qualified for the discus.  She had won twice in the Bienville Parish Invitational and the District 1-B championship.  She had finished as runner-up three other times including at regionals.  “The week before (state) I kept throwing the discus,” Guice said.  “I kept working, working, working trying to get through my mind to get everything put together right.”  With the disappointment of not catching gold in her favored competition of shot put, she went for a state title one last time.  She got it.  She threw a personal record of 101 feet winning by almost 5 feet.  “I got down there (state) and threw nothing below 90 (feet), ” Guice said. “The last throw I threw the 101.”

The state champion track star heard the news about her scholarship to BPC around her graduation.  “We were decorating for her graduation party and she got the call, ” Emma’s mother Kim Guice explained.  “She was very excited.  She went outside and took the coach’s call.  She came back in and said he wants me to come to throw. He wants me to come to throw the discus, the shot put, and the javelin too.”

Guice although she will commute back and forth to her home town is looking forward to traveling with the Lady Cavaliers.  “That will be something new, ” Guice said. “I’m excited about doing that because I like seeing different things and getting to go and traveling.”

The reward of her hard work at Castor translates to competing at the next level according to her father Kevin Guice.  “We’re very excited, ” Kevin Guice said.  “It’s not an end but an ‘in’ to her hard work and journey.  I hope she excels at BPCC and then rolls it into something bigger and better.”

Just like her ability to launch the shot and the discus, she’s going to work hard to make this opportunity go the distance.
