The Calvary Cavaliers clinched at least a share of the district title with a 63-0 win over Plain Dealing at home the last weekend.  The Cavaliers won their third consecutive District 1-A title under Coach Rodney Guin.  Calvary (8-1) has not lost a district game, even in their 2A days,  since October 26, 2012, when they lost to Mansfield 20-7.  That’s a streak of 46 district games.   Calvary moved back into the No. 1 seed in Division IV after their win.  The matchup with Ringgold on Friday is crucial to hold on to that final position.  The difference between the first and fourth seed is less than half a power ranking point.

Teams will mainly be focusing on their playoff positioning heading into the final week of regular-season play.

Currently,  Haynesville (6-3) and Homer (6-3) are both looking at first-round byes.  The winning team is guaranteed a bye and the losing team may have enough power ranking points to keep their bye.  Homer is currently No. 5 and could move up as high as No. 2 which would mean a home-field advantage throughout the playoffs to the Superdome.   Haynesville has a very strong position of keeping their bye, but Basille could jump up from No. 10 to capture that final bye slot.  It would require the worst-case scenario for Haynesville to occur which would be that North Webster loses to Green Oaks, Magnolia Charter loses to Bossier, Junction City lose, and, of course,  Haynesville loses to Homer.   Basille would have to have their best-case scenario occur for them to bypass Haynesville.  Both teams will need a week off to recover from the emotional rollercoaster of the most anticipated game of the season between the two teams.

Arcadia (3-6) is in a battle for a home playoff position for the first round of the playoffs in the 24-team bracket.   Arcadia is currently at No. 15 in the power rankings and positions No. 15 through No. 19 are a half a power point difference.   For Arcadia to have a home playoff game, they will have to be No. 15 or No. 16.  Their matchup with Glenbrook will be crucial for the home playoff game.   Besides their own game with Glenbrook, the only other game that could affect power rankings would be the Red River versus Avoyelles game.    With Glenbrook’s seven wins for the season already, the current power ranking will move up regardless of win or lose.   The extra 10 points for a win would have a significant impact on their positioning.   Unfortunately,  Glenbrook could play the role of spoiler as their season will end on Friday night.

Lincoln Prep (5-4) and Plain Dealing (2-7)  will finish out the district season on Friday.   Lincoln Prep (5-4) is pretty much set on a home playoff game in the first round.   A worst-case scenario could push them further down to around the No. 15, but that will still be a first-round game.  They don’t have enough power rankings points to push up to a bye.  The key games that could affect their seeding besides their game are the Magnolia SOE versus Bossier game and Lakeside versus Jonesboro-Hodge game.  Best case scenario could push them up to a No. 10 seed.  Plain Dealing has a very slim chance of pushing up to a home playoff spot.  It would require a win first and foremost over Lincoln Prep and help with  BTW win over Woodlawn and Magnolia over Bossier.    A worst-case scenario will not push them out of the playoffs but towards one of the bottom two rungs.

Magnolia School of Excellence (1-8) has a very slim opportunity to make the playoffs with a second win for the season.   If the Mariners can pull the upset over Bossier, the 19 power-ranking points should be enough to push them up into the field of 24 for Class A.   They will be a road warrior in the first round.

Ringgold (0-8) could get close to the last playoff spot with an upset win over Calvary on Friday night and Northwood-Lena defeats Block and Magnolia SOE wins over Bossier.  They would still have to hope for teams to opt-out of the playoffs to push them up the ladder into the 24-team field.   That’s a large feat to occur with a lot of help outside to make the playoffs.  The Redskins will have to hope for next year.

Playoffs positioning is also affected by teams who opt of the playoffs.  These estimations above could be altered by teams that opt out of the playoffs.

Here are the results from last weekend:

Homer 67, Magnolia SOE 6

The Pels are fighting for a top-four spot in the playoffs to give them an option of home field in the playoffs through the quarterfinals.  They left no doubt that they were going to slip up when they faced the Mariners.   The Pelican defense had a big hand in the lopsided score.   Three interceptions equaled three touchdowns for the win.  Tekeldric Webb, Lamichael Greer, and Brendon Harris all scored touchdowns off interceptions.   Webb added two offensive touchdowns on passes from Andrevious Buggs.  Buggs threw for three touchdowns and kept a quarterback keeper for another for Homer.  Devante Champ and Brandon Williams added a receiving touchdown.    Elyjay Curry ran for 109 yards and two touchdowns.  Freshman Gregory Williams took a 44-yard to the house for another touchdown.    John Watts took five tackles in the win.

Keesean Johnson scored all three touchdowns for Ringgold and piled on 199 yards rushing.  Omarion Barnum led the Redskin defense with 5 solo tackles.

Ringgold was facing a 3rd and 32 on their own 15 when Johnson broke away for an 85-yard run for a touchdown early in the first quarter.   The Hornets tied the game late in the first quarter with a 65-yard punt return for a touchdown by Markecion Carr.  The two were tied 6-6 after the first quarter.

Carr struck again just a little over a minute into the second quarter with a 69-yard run and gave Arcadia the 14-6 lead.  Johnson was not going to let the Redskins get too far ahead,  with a little under nine minutes left in the second quarter, Johnson took another 50-plus yard touchdown with a 56-yard touchdown run.  Conversion failed on the play and Arcadia held the slight 14-12 lead.   Carr continued to have a big second quarter as he recovered a Ringgold fumble and ran it back 34-yards for a touchdown.   Ringgold failed to convert a fourth down and gave Arcadia back possession on their own 32.  Facing a 4th and 5, Isaiah Jackson took a 27-yard touchdown to the house.  Arcadia took a 30-12 lead into halftime.

The first possession by Ringgold in the second half saw Johnson break into the Arcadia territory to the Arcadia 30.   Johnson takes them into the red zone on a 22-yard run.  The Redskins looked like they were going to be stopped again.  On a 4th and 5,  Johnson scored on a 9-yard run.  Carr pushes the Hornets back into the red zone again.  GeAuntre Nelson blasts into the end zone on a 15-yard run.  Arcadia led 38-18 after three quarters.

Carr makes one final statement for Arcadia in the fourth quarter with a 73-yard touchdown run.

Glenbrook 51, Beekman Charter 14

The Glenbrook Apaches continued to roll with a win over winless Beekman Charter on Friday night.  This was the fifth consecutive game that Glenbrook has scored more than 40 points.  Ty Feaster passed for 179 yards and two touchdown passes.   Turner McLelland was the top receiver with 3 receptions for 62 yards and a touchdown.  Cason Clemons got into the end zone on a 7-yard pass from Feaster.   The Apache offense spread around the rushing action over a variety of players.  Chase Sentell was the top rushing yards with 52.  DJ Carter scored on a 41-yard touchdown.  Tre Kent crashed into the end zone on a 5-yard run.  Landry Powell also scored a 30-yard touchdown run.  Grayson added a rushing touchdown for the Apaches.

Haynesville 43, Lincoln Prep 12

Haynesville Golden Tornado made one final statement before the Claiborne Parish Showdown with Homer next week with the win over Lincoln Prep on Thursday night at Jonesboro-Hodge Stadium.   J’ karius Turner had a stellar night with 11 rushes for 206 yards and three touchdowns for Haynesville.  Turner also took a kick-off return back to the end zone.  Toby Franklin and Kyle Woodard also scored for the Tors.

Lincoln Prep’s Dmitry Payne proved to be dangerous once again on special teams as he returned yet another kick-off return for a touchdown and added an 80-yard receiving touchdown for the Panthers.  Ta’rell Simmons passed for 209 yards and one touchdown.  Emmanuel Bryant continued to be a defensive juggernaut for LP with nine tackles.  Amaru Landry had a fumble recovery.

Neither team could get an advantage in the first quarter as they ended scoreless.

Turner kicked off early in the second quarter with a 6-yard run to give the Tors the early lead.   The sixth minute of the second quarter became action-packed and made up for the scoreless first quarter.  At 6.42, Toby Franklin rumbled into the end zone to push Haynesville up 14-0.  Twelve seconds later, Lincoln Prep tried to stop the momentum with an 80-yard pass from Simmons to Payne to close the gap at 14-6.  The kick-off swung the momentum back to the Golden Tornado as Turner broke loose on an 82-yard kick-off return touchdown.  Haynesville led 22-6 in the explosive second quarter minute.   Haynesville looked to put some space between them and the Panther in the first half, with 13 seconds remaining, Kyle Woodard broke into the end zone on an 8-yard run.   Not to be outdone, with no time left on the clock.  Payne took the kick-off return back 87 yards to close the lead at halftime to 29-12.

Third-quarter saw Turner reach the end zone for a third time with a 43-yard run.    Haynesville led 36-12 after three quarters.

Turner made one final statement to the Panthers on an 82-yard run for his fourth touchdown of the night for the Haynesville win.
