No. 12 St. Thomas (Florida) 56, No. 22 Louisiana Christian University 10

The Wildcats (0-1) dropped their first game against No. 12 St. Thomas (Florida) Bobcats (1-0).  St. Thomas pounced fast and had a strong first half which LCU struggled to overcome.  

Wildcat quarterback River Thompson went 13 for 27 throwing 117 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.  Brennan Maye-Jordan was the on the receiving end of the sole touchdown.  The top rusher for the Wildcats was Datlan Cunningham.  Ted Jamison led the defense with 6 tackles (1 solo, 5 assists).  

Rontavious Farm scored three touchdowns and rushed 20 carries for 130 yards.  Keely Watson threw 12 for 18 for 253 yards and two touchdowns.  Watson also added a quarterback keeper for a touchdown.  David Hayes was the top receiver catching 5 receptions for 123 yards and a touchdown.  Josh Borciquo’s sole reception was a 24-yard touchdown.  Reggie Foster also scored a rushing touchdown.  On defense, the Bobcats were led by three defenders:  Kendall Wilson (4 solo, 3 assists), Deuce Dunbar (1 solo, 6 assists), and Dustin Vinas (2 solo, 5 assists).  Caleb Walker snagged two interceptions including getting a pick-6.

The Bobcats started the first drive marching downfield quickly.  Watson connected with Khalitri Zow for a 37-yard pass to reach the Wildcat red zone.  Farm took over with a 20-yard touchdown run and St. Thomas the 7-0 lead.  St. Thomas started their next series in LCU territory.  Watson hit David Hayes on a 34-yard touchdown pass and gave the Bobcats the 14-0 lead.  Another short punt by LCU gave the Bobcats the ball at midfield.  Farm broke loose on a 25-yard bolt to the Wildcat red zone again.  A pass interference call against LCU put St. Thomas on the LCU 6.  Watson took the quarterback keeper for six points on the 3-yard run.  The wheels continued to wobble for the Wildcats as River Thompson scored a 38-yard pick-6.  St. Thomas had accumulated a 28-0 first-quarter lead.  LCU had finally reached the Bobcat territory, but the defense stopped them at the Bobcat 35 and gave it up on downs.   The last play of the first quarter saw Watson hit Jaelyn Thomas on a 34-yard pass and entered the LCU half once again.

St. Thomas saw Farm head to the end zone on the fourth play of the quarter on a 42-yard run.  The Bobcats continued to dominate at 35-0.  St. Martin continued to get good field position as they started their second drive at midfield.  Watson found Hayes open once again on a 24-yard touchdown to widen the lead to 42-0.  LCU finally caught a break as another punt was attempted but possession returned on a roughing the kicker was charged against the Bobcats.  The Wildcats took advantage of the gift.  Datlan Cunningham took a 17-yard run into the STU 39.  River Thompson found Brennan Mayes-Jordan on a 47-yard touchdown pass to give the Wildcats a score.  St. Thomas ran a little over three minutes off the clock before Watson connected with Hayes on a 22-yard pass to get to the LCU 35.  Watson struck again for the end zone to Jason Bourciquo on a 24-yard touchdown pass and gave the Bobcats a 49-7 lead with 30 seconds to go in the half.  

LCU started the second half and Datlan Cunningham broke loose on a 40-yard run to the STU 12.  The Wildcats reached a couple more yards and took a 25-yard field goal from Levi Hilborn.  LCU had cut the lead to 49-10.  The Wildcats took another shot to score but Caleb Walker stole an interception at the STU 24.  Watson took the Bobcats back down the field with a 35-yard pass to David Hayes.  Watson reached inside the LCU 5 with the next pass to Justin Anderson.  Reggie Foster finished the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run.  St. Thomas took their 56-10 lead and eventual win.

ULM 32, UAB 6

The Warhawks moved to 2-0 after a home win over the Blazers.  ULM relied on defense and special teams to put 20 points on the board.   Max Larson had 12 of those points with three field goals and extra points.  Car’lin Vigers had a pick-6.   Billy Pullen gave the defense a safety.  Ahmad Hardy and Hunter Herring gave the Warhawks offense some offensive touchdowns.  The Warhawks defense forced three turnovers.  

ULM quarterback General Booty went 9-for-16 throwing 87 yards.  The top rusher was Taven Curry had 13 carries for 64 yards.  Nate Sullivan Jr. had 2 receptions for 22 yards.  On defense, Carl Glass, Jr. had a massive 12 tackles (5 solo, 7 assists) for the Warhawks.  Billy Pullen and Tristan Sorter each had forced fumbles with Travor and Earl Barquet, Jr getting the recoveries.  As mentioned before, Vigors had an interception.  

UAB quarterback Jacob Zeno was 22-for-32 tossing for 167 yards including an interception.  Lee Beebe, Jr was the top rusher with 14 carries for 62 yards.  Kam Shanks was the top receiver with 4 receptions for 43 yards.  Sirad Bryant gave the Blazers 13 tackles (2 solo, 11 assists).  Everett Roussaw Jr added another 10 (3 solo, 7 assists). 

The Warhawks defense backed up the Blazers their 10.  ULM started with a good field position at the UAB 32.  Short gain runs allowed the Warhawks to get inside the 10 bit had to settle for Larson’s first field goal for 26 yards.  Zeno found an open Terrell McDonald for 19 yards first play of the drive to reach midfield.  Just like the Warhawks, defense kept the Blazers using short-yard gains.  The Blazers were stifled at the ULM 27 and Jonah Delange kicked a 46-yard field goal to tie at 3.  ULM’s final drive of the first quarter saw JD Stewart block the punt and give the Warhawks the ball inside the UAB 30.  The two stayed knotted at 3-3 for the remainder of the quarter

ULM started the second quarter with excellent field position.  Booty found Rylan Green on a 12-yard pass to reach the red zone.  Ahmad Hardy bolted 16 yards to score a touchdown for the Warhawks.  ULM up 10-3.  UAB took short gains to reach the ULM 3.  A false start changed a 4th and 1 to a 4th and 6 making UAB go for the Delange 26-yard field goal and cut the lead to 10-6.  Defense prevailed the next drives as UAB stopped ULM on a 4th and 1 and took the UAB 34.  The Warhawks’ Billy Pullen sacked Zeno for a 9-yard loss forcing a fumble recovered by Earl Barquet, Jr. at midfield.  With less than two minutes remaining, short runs got the Warhawks to the UAB 19.  With 7 seconds remaining in the first half, Larson nailed a 37-yard field goal to give ULM the 13-6 halftime lead. 

UAB started deep in their territory after a ULM punt.  Blazer Lee Witherspoon was tackled by Billy Pullen in the end zone to give the Warhawks two points for the safety and 15-6 lead.  ULM receiving possession back started at the ULM 39.  Ahmad Hardy rushed for 19 yards inside Blazer territory.  Booty found Jake Godfrey open on an 18-yard reception to reach the UAB 10.  Hunter Herring finished the drive on a 4-yard touchdown run.  The Warhawks took a 22-6 lead.   The Blazers tried to bounce back and stop the momentum but a fumble was forced by Tristan Shorter and recovered by Travor Randle.   ULM took back over and maintained their 22-6 lead to the end of the third quarter.  

UAB’s bad luck continued happening as they were pinned back within their own 10 once again.  UAB broke out of the tight situation and reached the UAB30.  Zeno’s pass turned into a pick-6 by Car’lin Vigers and the 29-6 lead.  Larson added one more score for the Warhawks with a 40-yard field goal and the 32-6 win.

Grambling 37, Tuskegee University 20

The Grambling Tigers (1-1) bounced back with a home 37-20 win over Division II Tuskegee University (0-2) Golden Tigers. 

Grambling quarterback was 16-for-26 for 304 yards tossing four touchdowns.  Javon Robinson had 4 receptions for 151 yards and a touchdown.  Nick Howard, Tony Phillips, and Covadis Knighten caught the other three passing. Touchdowns.  Josh Darling represented the defense on the scoreboard with a scoop and score. 

Other strong defense saw Andrew Jones have 11 tackles (6 solo, 5 assist) including two tackles for loss and half a sack.  Brenden Barley and Marcellius Johnson snagged an interception each.  

Tuskegee quarterback Christopher Roberson was 13-for-28 for 193 yards and two interceptions.   Backup quarterback Raequan Beal did reach the end zone on a pass to Rodricus Magee.  Johnny Marcus gave the Golden Lions a rushing touchdown.  On defense, Rossie Grimes collected 12 tackles (9 solo, 3 assists).

After a lackluster first three and out drive-by Grambling, the defense sparked the Tigers with a terception by Brenden Barley to give Grambling the ball in the Lions’ red zone at the 18.   Crawley connected to Nick Howard to reach the 1.  Tre Bradford finished the drive in the end zone and gave Grambling the 6-0 lead.  Tuskegee had to punt on the next drive.  Crawley struck again on a 53-yard pass to Javon Robinson to once again crack the red zone at the Lion 19.  Crawley found Nick Howard on a shot pass in the middle and he took care of the rest to the end zone and the 13-0 lead.  After exchanging drives with punts, Grambling got good field position once again deep in the Tuskegee territory on an interception by Marcellus Johnson.   Grambling would end the first quarter back on their side of the field after a sack on the GSU 47 and with 13-0 lead.  

The Tiger moved fast at the start of the second quarter Crawley made a short pass to Howard at midfield and bolted 22-yards.  Crawley found Robinson open on a deep route to the 4-yard line.  Crawley connected with Tony Phillips on a 4-yard touchdown pass.  Grambling went up 20-0.  Tuskegee made a run to start the momentum.  Roberson found Quavon Beckford open on a 22-yard reception.  Gabriel Garmon caught a Roberson pass field midfield and reached the Grambling 25.  Roberson took a quarterback keeper cracking the Grambling red zone to the 9.  Grambling defense stopped the Lions from crossing the goal line and they attempted a 22-yard field goal which was no good.  Grambling was hampered by a penalty ridden next drive.  Crawley overcame with a completion to Jacoby Bellazar.  Rossie Grimes forced the fumble but Grambling’s Javon Robinson recovered at the Tuskegee 46.  Khristopher Simmons was the next target for Crawley on a 28-yard pass.  Tuskegee defense forced a field goal.  Reed Harradine hit the 36-yard field goal to push the 23-0 lead.  Grambling wasn’t done in the second quarter.  Crawley connected once again with Javon Robinson on a 53-yard touchdown pass and 30-0 lead.  Tuskegee continued to be hamped by Grambling as Roberson suffered an 18 yard sack by Bryce Cage which forced a fumble that was recoveed by Josh Darling for a scoop and score and the 37-0 lead with 28 seconds remaining.  Tuskegee’s Johnny Morris jetted 19 yards to their 44.  A personal foul tacked on another 15 yards to the Grambling 41.  Back to back 11-yard passes from Crawley got them within field goal range.  Lorcan Ryan hit the 36-yard field goal to close the half with a Lions score but Grambling was still up 37-3. 

Tuskegee opening drive of the second half saw Roberson stretch downfield on a 26-yard pass to Garmon.  Reggie Brigman reception to the GSU 13 saw a break for the Lions.  Johnny Morris rushed 13 yards fir the Lions touchdown and cut the lead to 37-10.  Grambling tried to add to their lead later in the quarter ona 55-yard field goal but was blocked by Jarrell Culbreath.  Grambling lead 37-10 heading into the fourth quarter.  

Midway through the fourth quarter, Tuskegee backup quarterback Raequan Beal connected with Garmon on a 25-yard pass into Grambling territory.  Grambling didn’t allow much more progress.  Lorcan Ryans nailed the 47-yard field goal to cut into 37-13.  The large lead didn’t stop Tuskegee.  Beal marched the Lions downfield and finished the drive with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Rodricus Magee.  Grambling would run the clock out with the 37-20 win

 Prairie View A & M 37, Northwestern St. 31

The Northwestern State Demons (0-2) suffered a heartbreaking loss on their opening home game of the season against the Prairie View A&M Panthers (1-1) on Saturday night.  

The Panthers accumulated 464 offensive yards to the Demons 275.  The Demons defense also turned two interceptions into 12 points.  Northwestern also struggled on the third down conversion going 2 for 13.  

Northwestern State quarterback JT Fayard went 12-for-31 and 177 yards including a touchdown and interception.  Myles Kitt-Denton had 3 receptions for 103 yards and a touchdown.  Kenneth Lacy was the top rusher with 9 carries for 70 yards and a touchdown.  

Blake Gotcher accumulated a massive 23 tackles (6 solo, 17 assist) including two tackles for loss, two sacks, and a forced fumble.  Cadillac Rhone and Emmanuel Brown each snagged not just interceptions but pick-6’s.  

Prairie View quarterback Cameron Peters tossed 18-for-33 for 280 yards for two touchdowns and two interceptions.  Shemar Savage was a top target with 6 receptions for 133 yards including a touchdown.  Albert Thomas IV was also on the receiving end of the other touchdown.  Connor Wisham was the top rusher with 22 carries for 83 yards and a touchdown.  Lamagea McDowell also scoreda rushing touchdkwn.  Guillermo Garcia Rodriguez was 3-for-3 on field goals.  Ayden Jones swiped an interception for the Panthers.  

NSU came in stating they meant business as Fayard launched a 71-yard touchdown pass to Kitt-Denton on the first play of the game.  NSU jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first 14 seconds.  After exchaning a few possessions, the Panthers tied at 7 after Peters connected with Thomas on a 42-yard touchdown pass.  Northwestern defense regained the lead when Emmanuel Brown took a pick-6 37 yards for the 14-7 lead.  Prairie View tried to keep pace.  Peters cometed a 47-yard pass to Savage to the NSU 21.  NSU defense forced a 34-yard field goal.  NSU was up 14-10 at the end of the first quarter.  

The Panthers big play allowed them to captuere their first drive of the second quarter.   Peters hit Savage on a 46-yard pass to the NSU 5.  Connor Wisham finsihed with a 5-yard run to the end zone.   The Panthers led 17-14.  After another Demon punt, the Panther took to the ground game for short yardage gains which eventually led to a 22-yard field goal and the 20-14 halftime lead.  

The Demons first drive of the second half started at midfield after a Lions punt.  Kennieth Lacy broke loose on a 45-yard run to the end zone and gave NSU back the lead at 21-20.  Prairie View scrapped to get back the lead.  Scooter Adams headed inside Demon territory on a 22-yard run.  Peters hit Savage on a 17-yard pass to crack the red zone at the NSU 11.  The Demons stopped the ground attack from breaking the goal line.  Peters saw an open Savage in the end zone to swap the lead back to the Panthers favor at 27-21.  Northwestern had another three and out.  Prairie View look to make it a two score game.  Peters sent the Panthers to midfield on a 16-yard pass to Trejon Spilers.  NSU looked to have halted the progress to a 4th and 1.  Prairie View went for it with a 3-yard run by Lameaga McDowell.  The fresh set of downs saw Peters find Spiller on another 16-yard pass.  NSU defense did stifle the Panthers this time and they had to settle for a 41-yard field goal to a 30-21 lead heading into the final quarter.  

NSU offense continued to struggle down field and punted once again.  Prairie View was backed up to their own 9.  Many’s Cadillac Rhone caught a pick-6 at the PVAM 16 to bring the Demons back to 30-28.  The Panthers bounced back as Peters 30-yard pass to Chris Herron put them back in scoring position.  Lameaga McDowell had down 18-yards for another Panther touchdown and the 37-28 lead.  NSU caught a break after a punt as the Panthers muffed the punt and Ty Hall recovered it on the PVAM 38.  Fayard pass completed to Joseph Moreland for 23 yards and inside the Panthers 20.  A holding call pushed them out of the red zone.  Northwestern had to settle for a 38-yard field goal but were back within one score at 37-31 with 7:56 remaining.  The Panthers reached midfield but had to punt.  PVAM  defense strucj on the comeback as Ayden Jones intercepted a Demon pass with less than two minutes.  Prairie View attempted to run the clock but had to punt with 1:30 led.  NSU had one final chance as they started at their own 1.   A pass interference call gave them breathing room and a new set of downs.  Another pass interference pushed the Demons to the NSU 31.  Fayard took the keeper on a 6-yard run but the passes were not being caught.  On a 4th and 4, Fayard passed a 14-yard pass to Myles Kitt-Denton to reach Panther territory.  With the end closing end, Fayard once again connected with Kitt-Denton for 18-yards.  Fayard struck again on a 30-yard pass to Twon Hines to the Prairie View 1. Prairie View calls timeout with 1 second left.  Fayard take the quarter backer keeper but was stuffed at the line of scrimmage giving the Panthers the 37-31 win 

Hendrix 43 Centenary 20

The Hendrix Warriors spoiled the opening home game against the Centenary Gents.  Hendrix piled on 401 yards offense to the Gents 290.  

Centenary quarterback Kody Fuentes went 30 for 46 tossing 299 yards and a touchdown and an interception.  Fuentes top target was Kobe Chambers with 9 receptions and a touchdown.  Jay Richardson scored the lone receiving touchdown.  The rushing offense for Centenary had minus-9 yards mainly from 5 sacks on Fuentes.  Bobby Shanklin Jr and Fuentes added rushing touchdowns for the Gents.  On defense, Vance Feurerbacher collected 9 solo tackles including 2 tackles for loss and a forced fumble.  Jacob Wilson grabbed two interceptions.  

Hendrix quarterback Jacob Buniff went 21 for 27 for 192 yards and four touchdowns.  The Warriors top receiver was Parker Turley with 5 reception for 88 yards and teo touchdowns.  Jax Johnson also had two receiving touchdowns.  Jason Sullivan was the top rusher with 11 carries for 47 yards and two touchdowns.  Tristan Johnson terrorized the Gents with 9 tackles including two sacks and four tackles for loss.  Jayvion Coulter snagged an interception.  

Hendrix Bunnif showed his passing skills as he hit Berry for 30 yards inside Gents territory.  The Warriors wasted no time to get inside the red zone on a 15 yard pass from Buniff to Kanyn Utley.  Buniff took the quarterback keeper 13 yards to the Centenary 4.  Jason Sullivan finished the drive on a 4 yard run ti give Hendrix the 8-0 lead.  Hendrix started their second drive on the Centenary side of the field.  The Warriors reached the Centenary 14 on an 18-yard pass from Bunniff to Jax Johnson.  Johnson got the call again and this time all the way to the end zone.  Hendrix had compiled a 15-0 lead with a little under 7 minutes remaining in the first quarter.  Centenary was three and out on their next drive and their punt was blocked by Dylan Dount as Hendrix took over at midfield.  Centenary caught a break as Jax Johnson fumbled the ball on a 46-yard loss to the Hendrix 4 where Fueherbacher recoved the ball.  Bobby Shanklin carried the ball to the end zone for Centenary first score of the season and cut the lead to 15-6.  Hendrix pushed to inside the Centenary 10 on the last play of the first quarter.  

The Warrior combo of Bunniff and Johnson scored on the first play of the second quarter on a 9-yard touchdown pass.  Hendrix extended their lead to 22-6.  Centenary pinned the Warrior back at their own 5 on the next drive.  Bunniff’s short pass game gave them some breathing room.  Bunniff found Bruce on a 17-yard pass to get their 40.  Centenary forced a fumble on Bunniff which the quarterback recovered at the 29.  Bunniff tried the reliable Johnson and reaxhed midfield again.  The quarterback keeper cracked the Centenary territory.  Johnson did more damage to Centenary with a 25-yard reception to the Centenary 8.  Berry caught an 8-yard pass for the touchdown and gave the Warriors a 29-6 lead.  Centenary lost possesion on the next drive as Javyvion Coulter intercepted and ran back to the Centenary 40.  Bunniff wasted no time again as he sent a 24-yard pass to Utley and reach inside the 10 again.  Jason Sullivan took his opportunity to cross the goalline on the 6-yard run.  Hendrix led 36-6 at halftime.  

Centenary had to punt on their first possession of the second half.  The Gent looked to have them pinned at midfield but a personal foul supplied a fresh set of downs and another trip on the Centenary side of the field.  Buniff struck on a 29-yard touchdown pass to Berry.  Hendrix expanded the lead to 43-6.  After another Centenary punt, Hendrix looked to build on their lead but Jacob Wilson took another interception at the Centenary 25.  Centenary took short plays midfield.  Fuentes completed a 15-yard pass to Isaiah King to reach the Hendrix side of the field.  Another 19-yard pass by Fuentes to Devin Ardoin sent the Gents to the Hendrix 28.  The Warrior defense kicked in and stopped the momentum.  Hendrix caused two sacks by Tristan Johnson and McKay Young and forced a turnover on downs.  Hendrix exited the third quarter with a 43-6 lead.  

The two teams swapped punts in the fourth quarter..  Centenary’s Jacob Wilson caught another interception at the Henderson 25.  Fuentes took a 10-yard pass to Butler to enter the red zone.  Fuentes completed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jay Richardson.  Centenary closed the gap to 43-14.  Centenary defense sparked another late possession as Wright fumbled the run on fourth down.  Hendrix recovered but on a loss for yards and turnover on downs.  Fuentes passed to Chambers on a 11-yard completion and into Hendrix territory.  Another Fuentes to Chambers 18-yard completion to the Hendrix 25.  Chambers took a third reception inside the 20.  Fuentes took one more pass to the Hendrix 1.  Fuentes finished the drive to the end zone and closed the scoring at 43-20.
