The second round of the playoffs played out throughout the area on Monday night, and three local teams advanced to the quarterfinals.
Although District 1-A had a brilliant first round, only one team remains after the second round. The two District 1-C team look to be on a collision course to meet in the semifinals if they can get through their quarterfinal matchups. Here are some recaps of the second round:
DISTRICT 1-A
No. 5 Haynesville Lady Tornados 37, No. 12 Lincoln Prep Lady Panthers 32
The Lady Tors had to eliminate their fellow district sisters Lincoln Prep to push forward to the quarterfinals. Marissa Tell piled on the points scoring 20 for the Lady Tors. Tiyan Heard was the top scorer for the Lady Panthers.
No. 9 Logansport Lady Tigers 82, No. 8 Homer Lady Pels 81
Normally 81 points would win you a game in a ladies’ basketball game, but it wasn’t enough for the Lady Pels. Jor’dan Shelton burned the nets for 33 points and shooting an amazing 12 for 16 from the free thrown line. Kersten Webb splashed three 3-points en route to 15 points. Senior Shannon Turner scored 10 also for Homer. For the Lady Tigers, D. Briggs had a massive 13 point first quarter to finish with 25. L. Jenkins had a strong second half to score her 23 points. O McAllister and A. Wallace each reached double-digits with 10 apiece.
No. 1 North Central Lady Hurricanes 84, No. 16 Plain Dealing Lady Lions 53
The Plain Dealing Lady Lions had to travel down close to Opelousas to face the No. 1 seeded North Central Lady Hurricanes. Despite having three players in double digits for enough, their growl was not enough. Za’Kiyah Williams went 11 for 11 from the free-throw line to lead the Lady Lions in scoring with 19 points. Laterrica Stewart caused her storm in the fourth quarter as she piled in 15 including four 3-pointers in the fourth alone to finish with 18 points. Ya’jaia Goudeau added 21 points for the Lady Hurricanes. Katelynn Harrison contributed 15 for the win.
CLASS C
NO. 5 Gibsland-Coleman Lady Bulldogs 56, No. 12 Johnson Bayou Lady Rebels 44
Gibsland Coleman Lady Bulldogs survived the scoring machine of Gracie Young was blazed the nets for 30 points in the attempted upset. The Lady Bulldog had a little rust as they haven’t played in two weeks. The rust had to be shaken off as Samora Sampson had to take the lead for the Lady Bulldogs in the first half. Sampson scored a double-double for the night as she over 10 rebounds and 12 points for the night. With the second half, Jamaya Jackson and Ke’Honesty William found their groove in the second half to lead the Lady Bulldogs to the quarterfinals. Jackson scored 15 of her 19 points in the second half. Williams scored 11 of her 15 points in the fourth quarter alone. “I’m going to start like I always do, a win is a win and I’m going to take it,” Gibsland coach Andrew Haulcy said. “In the beginning, it started kind of rough. I want to say those two weeks without playing had a big role. We started rusty. Good thing we had our seventh grader (Sampson) she brought us along and kept us afloat until my key players got it going. On to the next round to the quarterfinals where we lost last year. Trying to get a little further.”
