Both the Summerfield boys and girls teams had an opportunity to clinch their district titles with a win at Gibsland-Coleman on Tuesday night. They found that the task was not going to be easy. The Lady Rebels can say mission accomplished while the boys will have to wait for another chance on Friday against New Living Word

Summerfield Lady Rebels 60, Gibsland-Coleman Lady Bulldogs 45

Two teams my only exist in District 1-C, but the two teams are Class C No. 2 Summerfield Lady Rebels and No. 5 Gibsland-Coleman Lady Bulldogs. Summerfield took round one eleven days ago. A win and the Lady Rebels will clinch the district.

Summerfield tried to pull away early with a 7-0 run early in the first quarter, but Jamaya Jackson and Ke’Honesty Williams pulled the Lady Bulldogs back with one point by the end of the first quarter.

The two teams traded baskets until around three minutes remained. Jackson was fouled and nailed the two free throws to send GCHS up 22-21. A timeout was called by Summerfield and during this time the refs and coaches had a discussion and all of a sudden the Bulldogs were back down 21-20 because the points were taken off the board. Seems there was a clerical error with the number of team fouls and the Bulldogs were not supposed to shoot the one and one. Jackson tied the game with a free throw again. Summerfield’s Meadors triggered a late 6-0 run to send the Lady Rebels up 27-21 at halftime.

The Lady Rebels continued to stay a step ahead of Gibsland-Coleman as they could overcome the six-point deficit. Summerfield had another late quarter spark with another 6-0 run and the Lady Rebels were 12 after the end of the third.

Gibsland resorted to a barrage of threes. Williams buried three straight. Samora Sampson and Bailee Haulcy each netted one. The threes weren’t enough as Aylasia Combs poured in 8 in the final quarter and Summerfield finished strong to win the district title.

Coach Randy Carlisle though winning the district says his team didn’t even play their top game. “They didn’t play well,” Carlisle said. “They started slow. They played to the level of competition. I have a lot of respect for Gib(sland). We’ve had some distractions but I don’t want to take away from Gibsland. We kept pushing and pushing and finally came through.”

Aylasia Combs finished with 18 points. Malaysia Tate had an impressive night with 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists. Yasmine Robinson had 12 points and 5 assists. Ajai Meadors chipped in 10 for the Lady Rebels.

Jamaya Jackson netted 18 for the Lady Bulldogs. Ke’Honesty Williams bucketed 15 points including four 3-pointers. Rebounding queens were Shamaria Durham with 8 and Samora Sampson with 7.

Gibsland-Coleman Bulldogs 55, Summerfield Rebels 38

The Bulldogs said Summerfield would not clinch a district title on senior night in Gibsland. Summerfield will have to wait for another chance on Friday night against the New Living Word Lions.

It was a massive offensive stall in the first quarter as the Bulldogs took a slight 7-6 lead after the first quarter.

Donatarius Coleman popped two 3-pointers in the second quarter. Summerfield’s Hightower and Levingston matched Coleman’s two threes. The two teams had five lead changes throughout the second quarter. In the closing seconds, Gibsland’s Ryder fired a shot that bounced off the rim. Kee’Tyrrie Abney tipped in the rebound to give GCHS the 21-19 lead going into halftime.

The Bulldogs came out of the locker room fired up. Marcus Durham scored a quick six points and Abney added a couple of free throws to finish out the opening of the second half with a 10-2 run. Not only was the offense on fire, but the Bulldogs committed three steals during the run. Gibsland-Coleman maintained a 35-25 lead heading into the final frame.

The momentum just continued for the Bulldogs as Terrance James -Gray pushed another opening 8-2 run and stretched GCHS lead to 16 points at 45-29 with a little under four minutes remaining. The Rebels offense just could not get kickstarted as the Bulldogs pushed past Summerfield.

“My boys played well, ” said Bulldogs head coach Roger Jones. “They played hard tonight. They played some defense.”

Kee’Tyrrie Anthony led the Bulldogs with 18 points and 7 rebounds. Terrance James-Gray netted 13 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Marcus Durham scored 12 points. Dontarious Coleman bucketed 10 points. Ryder contributed 5 assists.

Summerfield lead scorer was Derrick Royal with 15 points and 6 rebounds. Hightower put in 6 assists.

Gibsland-Coleman still has a shot at a three-way district matchup if Summerfield loses to New Living Word on Friday. Coach Jones is not concerned. “Either way it goes. We’re just going to roll with the punches.”
