The LHSAA State Swim Meet was held last week at the Sulphur Parks and Recreation Aquatic Center. The Calvary Lady Cavaliers finished as the state runner-up in Division IV. Episcopal School of Acadiana claimed the state championship with 265 points. Calvary finished with 233 points.
The Calvary Lady Cavaliers medaled in five different events en route to their state runner-up. Eighth-grader Macy Monday claimed two state championships in the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.09) and 500-yard freestyle (5:19.93). Macy Monday was also part of the state runner-up 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard medley relay. Other members of the 200-yard medley relay were Claire Roper, Grace Googe, and Kensey Scoggin. Other members of the 400-yard freestyle relay were Elissa Pollitt, Maebree Monday, and Claire Roper. Roper also won a state championship in the 100-yard backstroke (58.90) and brought back a state runner-up 200-yard individual medley. Kinsey Scoggin reached the finals and placed fourth in the 500-yard freestyle and fifth in the 200-yard freestyle. Grace Googe reached the finals in the 50-yard freestyle and placed in sixth place. Googe was also part of the state runner-up 200-yard freestyle relay team. Other members were Elissa Pollitt, Maebree Monday, and Kensey Scoggin.
The Calvary Cavaliers boys team finished third in the swim championships. Zachary Ponder received the Outstanding Swimmer award for Division IV. He deserved it with three state championships and one state runner-up. Zachary Ponder won individual championships in the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.09) and 500-yard freestyle (4:37.52). Ponder was also part of the state champion 200-yard freestyle relay (1:33.89) and the state runner-up 200-yard medley relay. Other members of both teams were Sam Ponder, Eli Haase, and Jackson Morton. Sam Ponder also claimed a state championship in the 100-yard backstroke (54.97) and finished third in the 200-yard individual medley. Eli Haase claimed state runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly and third in the 100-yard backstroke. Jackson Morton qualified for the finals in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke and finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
Cedar Creek Lady Cougars finished fifth in the Division IV team competition. Mckenzie Jones reached the podium three different times and was part of the fifth-place 200-yard medley relay. Jones finished as state runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle placed third in the 500-yard freestyle and was part of the third-place 400-yard relay. Other members of the 400-yard relay and 200-yard medley relay were Madison Morris, Hannah Hiers, and Gracie Jones. Madison Morris qualified for the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard breaststroke which she placed fifth in both races. Gracie Jones qualified for the finals and finished eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley.
Cedar Creek Cougar’s one-man show Camdyn Napper medaled in both of his events. Napper won the state championship in the 200-yard individual medley (2:00.65) and finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Loyola Flyers’ Gus Nicolosi won the 100-yard freestyle (46.72) for the state championship and finished third in the 50-yard freestyle. Nicolosi was also part of the 200-yard medley relay that finished seventh: Other members of the 200-yard medley were Aaron Gonzales, Nick Culbertson, and Reece Armagost.
Choudrant Aggies also had a one-man show with Jack Groce. Groce claimed a state runner-up in the 200-yard individual medley. Groce also finished fourth in the 500-yard freestyle.
Glenbrook reached the finals in relay races for the boys and girls. The Apaches swim team finished seventh in the 200-yard medley. Members of the boys’ 200-yard medley were Samuel Scroggs, Tucker Pittman, Jackson Lott, and Carson Whitehead. The Lady Apaches finished eighth in the 200 yard freestyle relay. Members of the girls 200 yard freestyle relay were Emily Chanler, Adriana Vandenoord, Madelyn Whitehead, and Mollie Thurman.
