If you were looking for a slugfest by the Lady Cavaliers, you would have been sadly disappointed.  The state championship became a chess game of defense mainly between the pitching duel between Calvary’s Riley Walker and Catholic-Pointe Coupee’s Blair Bizette.  Walker pitched 8 innings, 5 hits, 0 earned runs, 2 walks, and 8 strikeouts.  Bizette finished with 7 2/3 innings 5 hits, 1 earned run, 1 walk, and 7 strikeouts.  Walker went for 123 pitches as Bizette went for 115.

“It was an intense game,” Coach Tiffany Wood said. “We knew it would be close! Defense and pitching kept us together and we kept battling to score the run we needed! Excited is an understatement!!! So proud of our girls!”

The Hornets Bizette hit a double in the top of the first and that was as close they got to scoring in the top of the first.  Trinitee Bruno single started the Calvary but two flyouts to outfield stopped that progress.  No score after one inning.

Riley Walker was all the defense the Lady Cavaliers needed in the top of the second with three strikeouts.  Jamie Fielder started with Calvary at bottom of the second with a single.  Ella Franks got on with a walk and sent Fielder to second.  A strikeout ended the inning for Calvary still knotted at zero.

Melancon started CPCHS off with a single.   The following sacrifice bunt pushes Melancon to second.  A pop fly error allowed LeBlanc on first and put Melancon one base away from breaking the scoreless knot.  Riley Walker got the second out on a strikeout.  Bruno stopped the scoring catching the third out pop fly at third.    Bruno got on base for the Lady Cavs from an error on third base and reached third base.  Calvary also missed their chance to end the scoreless tie.  After three still 0-0.

Dugas’ single of Pointe Coupee was the only hit of the fourth as neither team threatened to score.

The Hornets once again in the fifth had the only base runners with a walk for LeBlanc and a single by Frey.  Five innings down and still no score.

Guerin for the Hornets gets on with a single but Ramsey Walker turns a double play to close out the top half of the inning.  Ramsey Walker breaks the hitless streak for the Lady Cavaliers but no score still at the end of the sixth.

Neither team was going to allow this game to end in the regulation seven innings as both teams went three up, three down.

Bizette got a walk and that as far as the Hornets got in the extra frame.  The first two batters for Calvary put out.  Trinitee Bruno hits a line drive to center for a single.  Ramsey Walker gets another line drive to the center sending Bruno home to give the Lady Cavaliers a 1-0 state championship win.

Ramsey Walker went 2 for 4 with the lone double and lone RBI.  Trinitee Bruno goes 2 for 4.  Jamie Fielder goes 1 for 3

Riley Walker finished the complete game for the win.
