It’s getting close to playoff time in a few weeks and time to start monitoring the power rankings and where your team stands for the playoffs.

Like everything else in the world, COVID-19 has played havoc with local teams.   The defending Class B state champions Doyline Panthers played their first game since November 30 and currently sit with a 4-0 record at No. 3 in the boys.  In comparison, No. 1 Anacoco under former Summerfield coach Randy Carlisle sits with a 19-2 record.  The Panthers have not lost a game in over a year now.  With the low amount of games, any loss could seriously alter their playoff positioning.

District 1-A can boast of four teams currently in the top 10.   In Class A, the Arcadia Hornets sit at No. 2 with a 6-1 record.  They went into the Christmas break with their first loss against 5A Ruston.  Homer sits back at No. 8 with a 3-6 record.  Homer has built their power ranking up with the bonus points of playing higher classes including two 4A opponents and 5A Captain Shreve.  A win over 4A Evangel boosted their cause.  Another team that is gaining bonus points for the power rankings is No. 7  Magnolia School of Excellence (0-5) who has yet to win a game but has played three 4A teams and 5A Parkway.  In Division IV,  Calvary Cavaliers have been finding every pick up they can as they have compiled a 14-5 record.  The Bossier Invitational helped them to jump to No.4 with a close loss and bonus points for playing Bossier and defeating the then No. 1 ranked Wossman Wildcats.

With New Living Word opting out for the season, only two teams will be competing for the District 1-C title this year.  Gibsland-Coleman Bulldogs and Summerfield Rebels both find themselves sitting in the top 10 in power rankings.  The Bulldogs are currently sitting at No. 4 in Class C.   Gibsland-Coleman has been able to play almost an entire schedule against Class A and B schools with a game against 3A Union Parish and 5A Ruston.  Despite only winning 3 games for the season, that means bonus power ranking points for playing up in classification.  The big win for the Bulldogs so far this season was their win over Ringgold who has been collecting some wins lately and only helps the Bulldogs.  Summerfield sits right behind the Bulldogs at No. 5 with a 4-11 record.   The Rebels have a similar schedule to Gibsland-Coleman. Summerfield has had success against District 2-B with the lone loss is to Class B state runner-up Simsboro.  Two games against 3A Union Parish and another against 5A Ruston.

Homer Lady Pelicans are the sole team in District 1-A.  A big win over and 8-5 4A Minden early in the season has helped the Lady Pels push them in the top ten.  Also boosting their ranking has been playing three District 1-5A opponents in Haughton, Benton, and Airline.  Higher classification bonus points help that score.

The Gibsland-Coleman Lady Bulldogs currently sit firmly at No. 2.   The swarming defense of the young team has achieved an impressive 9-2 record. The big wins are giving Union Parish its only loss along with a win over Lakeview and 5A Haughton.   Hicks is currently No. 1 with a little over 4 power point ranking lead.

Summerfield Lady Rebels are hanging around the top 10 at No. 8.  The Lady Rebels have pulled off some big wins over 2A Avoyelles Charter with a 12-5 record and giving Quitman (12-2) its only second loss of the season.   Wins over Weston and Simsboro has helped.  Taking on No. 1 in 5A Walker will keep piling on a win which will continue to benefit the Lady Rebels.

The seeding will become more crucial as we move toward the end of the season.  For Class A and B, the Top 24.  Class C will be the top 16.   Power ranking positions used in this article were provided by GeauxPreps.com (www.geauxpreps.com)
