Calvary took advantage to get one more chance in before next weekend’s LHSAA State Championship to compete in the Shreveport City Championship at Byrd High School. The Cavalier wrestling teams came home with two city runner-ups and a third-place finish.

Mitchell Colgin brought home a 3rd place in the 145 class. His 3rd place match came against Q. White from Caddo Magnet. Colgin started out with a first period takedown that gave him the 2-0 lead after the first period. Coglin got two more takedowns to take a 6-0 lead deep into the second period. White seemed to have an injury and gained a takedown himself after a reset and closed in 6-2. Colgin took back control but White pulled off an escape to close the gap to 6-3. Colgin secured his win with another takedown and completed and closed out the match with an 8-3 win.

Coach Jason Colgin says of the young Cavalier team that they are still learning. “Still learning,” Colgin said. “My 195 guy (Mayeaux) started the week after Thanksgiving. He’s brand new. He’s doing good things this year. He’s got a few wins. He doing good things that look good on the mat. He’s got a little learning to do. My 145 (Colgin) is still a freshman. He stepped up from 126 last year. He’s in there with the big boys this year. My 152 is still learning also. He’s just a sophomore. The guys in weight class are brutal. He’s in one of the toughest weight classes.” One of the key Calvary wrestlers, Christian Otzenberger, will not be available to wrestle for the remainder of the year, but he has been there for support. “Otz(enberger) is not going to be back for state. He’s rehabbing right now and should be ready to go next year. They are seeing good things but just not worth it to get that further damage.”

The Cavaliers have less than a week to go for the climax at the end of the wrestling season at the LHSAA State Championships which will be held at Century Link Center in Bossier City on February 14 & 15.
