Homer hosted Union Parish on Monday night and the matchups did not disappoint. Jordan Shelton had a double-double with 18 points and 12 steals. Eight of those steals came in the second quarter alone. The Homer Pelican had a lead by as much as 11 points in the third quarter, but the Farmers tilled away that lead and took the game to overtime.  

HOMER LADY PELS 69, UNION PARISH LADY FARMERS 37

The Lady Pels had to overcome a first-quarter deficit to the Lady Farmers as they took the early 17-14 lead into the second quarter. Late in the first quarter, Union Parish took a small run by Alisha Butler to tie up the game. A last-second three by Shaniya Thomas gave the Lady Farmers the early lead. Then the second quarter came. J. Curry kept the Lady Pels in the first quarter as Shelton struggled to find the basket. She managed a three in the middle of the first. Then the second quarter came. Back to back baskets by Shannon Turner had the Lady Pels with a small three-point lead but enough for Union Parish to call a timeout. The timeout only spurred on the Lady Pels. Kenya Walker popped the net and a shot kickstarted Shelton. Another timeout to stop the scoring from bleeding any further as Homer jumped out to a 7-point lead. The defense kicked into high gear for Homer.  Shelton performed a block, a defensive rebound, and two steals following. Walker and Curry scored more. Shelton scored and drew the foul. Willis scored to end the 13-0 run for Homer as they carried a 37-21 lead into halftime. The momentum carried forward into the second half as Homer went on an opening 9-0 run in the third quarter and pushed the game out of hand. The clutch defense also did not allow Union Parish to score a field goal until the last three minutes of the third quarter as they took a 58-33 lead into the final frame. Homer cruised for the remainder of the game for the win.

“We played without two starters and I was very pleased how my bench personnel came through,” said Coach Elaine Gilbert. “I thought our intensity on the press helped extend the lead. Jordan Shelton came through with multiple steals and rebound. She played on both ends. That’s what we’re going to need for district play.”   

“Defense won it for us,” Shelton said. “We all played a part in the defense, offense, transitioning…everything. “

J. Curry led the Lady Pels with 20 points. Jordan Shelton netted 18. Kenya Walker bucketed 10 along with Ashanti Glass.

Shanyia Thomas scored 16 for Union Parish. Alisha Butler contributed 10.

UNION PARISH FIGHTIN’ FARMERS 64, HOMER PELICANS 62 (OT)

Union Parish started fast as Harris opened with four points and scores by Jakiyra Fields and Corrien Glossen had Homer down 9-2 before they knew it. Homer called a timeout early and gained their composure. Union Parish took a 16-9 lead after the first quarter. Threes by Xavier Mills and Takaviuntae Kidd brought Homer back within four points. Another three by Mills sparked a 10-0 run by the Pelicans and Homer surpassed their opponents to take the 29-25 lead into halftime. A hot hand in by Star Thomas early in the third started to look like the Pels were going to run away with this one as they extended their lead to 36-26 in the first three minutes. Union Parish called timeout to regroup. The two teams traded baskets for the next three minutes. Baskets by Glossen and Fields kept the game within reach as Homer maintained their lead at 45-38 heading into the final quarter. Union Parish chipped away at the lead to four points with a small 5-0 run. Homer still maintained a six-point lead with 45 seconds remaining. A steal by and a basket by Harris followed by another steal Walters and basket by Holley had Union close to 57-55 with 27 seconds remaining. Jayshun Miller was fouled and missed the one and one. Harris grabbed the rebound and quickly called time out down two points with 18.8 seconds. Glossen drove the lane and fouled for two shots. Glossen buried both free throws to tie the game at 57-57. Homer lost the ball on a jump ball with 8.9 seconds. Holley missed the final shot of regulation. D’Anthony Kimble struck first for Homer in overtime with a three. Glossen unintimidated drove to score. Another basket by Holley gave Union Parish the 61-60 lead. Kimble regained the lead once again. With 58 seconds remaining in OT, Harris scored after a steal to retake the 63-62 lead. The Farmers proceeded to play keep away until they were fouled. Glossen was sent to the line again and nailed one of the free throws. Wallace rebounded the missed second free throw and was fouled. Wallace shot the first free throw and a lane violation negated the second shot. Homer took one final chance as Thomas drove for a final shot but was short as Union pulled out the overtime win.

D. Harris scored 18 for the Fighting Farmers. Corrien Glossen bucketed 15. Tre Holley scored 12. Jakiyra Fields rounded out with 10 points.

D’Anthony Kimble was the only scorer in overtime with five points en route to his 15 points. Xavier Woods buried three 3-pointers to score 15 for the night. Jayshun Miller pocketed 12 points.

The Pelicans and Lady Pelicans are on the road to Shreveport on Tuesday night against Green Oaks.
