The Calvary Lady Cavalier (23-7) volleyball squad is headed back to Lafayette to the Ochsner LHSAA Volleyball State Tournament.  They advanced to the Division IV quarterfinals with a 3-0 (25-8, 25-11, 25-10) win over Thomas Jefferson.  This will be back-to-back years that the Lady Cavs are competing.   Last year was the first time that a team north of Alexandria had broken into the state volleyball tournament.

“It feels great.  It’s such fun coaching these ladies,” Coach Jon Casey said.  “We’re working hard and we’re young.  I was surprised that we finished as well as we did.   When we finish well in the regular season it sets us up well for the postseason.  Thankfully we were able to do our job.  I was a little worried and we had nothing on this team (Thomas Jefferson).  We didn’t know what to expect.  I told the girls to go play as hard as they can.  I was really happy with how they played.   We made a few mistakes but overall were very happy with them.   We know down there (Lafayette), the top eight teams are phenomenal.  We have lots of respect and hopefully, we can compete with them.  We are young.  Mostly freshmen and sophomores and I highly expect us to be down there again.  We are only graduating one.”

Lone senior Katie Kent switched over from basketball to volleyball.  “It was amazing.  I loved the preparation of going into it before the game set up.  It’s just fond memories all around. “

Junior libero Caroline Christler will make her return to the state tournament.  This will be a different experience than the first trip last year.  “It’s a whole different group of girls like half of them have not seen the dome that we play in so it will be an adjustment.  I’m hoping we can calm them

down and smooth their nerves over.”

Kill master Kiya Casey sees the hard road it’s taken to get back to Lafayette.  She also sees the positivity on the team has pushed them back.  “It was a hard road last year and this year.  We didn’t get it easily either year.  We had to push to get here.  It wasn’t given to us.  This year I don’t know if it was expected for us to do it but we came out and showed up.  I think this year we are more positive like we had a lot of good feelings on the team.  We have great girls that are rooting for everybody.”

The Lady Cavs will have their quarterfinals matchup against No. 5 Notre Dame (28-16) at 4:20 at the Cajun Dome in Lafayette.
