Gibsland-Coleman Lady Bulldogs and Doyline Lady Panthers had to each play three games on Saturday afternoon in order to reach their respective brackets finals at the Lakeside Tournament  on Saturday.    The Lady Bulldogs after an exhausting day fell to the Northwood Lady Falcons 60-31.   The Doyline Lady Panthers took three wins for the day as they won the consolation bracket finals with a 44-34 win over the Calvary Lady Cavaliers.

GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP

NORTHWOOD LADY FALCON 60, GIBSLAND-COLEMAN 31

Northwood reached the final earlier in the day by defeating the Lakeside Lady Warriors.   Gibsland Coleman had pushed through with an overtime upset over Northwood’s fellow District 1-4A foe in Minden Lady Tiders.

The Lady Bulldogs stay close to their towering opponents as they overcame an early 6-0 run with their own late run to close out only down 14-11.

Northwood then struggled from the field as they made only 1 of the first 12 shots in the first quarter.  Ke’Honesty Williams popped a three and a free throw to get the Lady Bulldogs within 16-15 early.   Jamaya Jackson layup gave the Lady Bulldogs the slight lead at 17-16.  Northwood got hot again they kept the ball on their end of the court and only allowed one shot and took control again with an 8-0 run with four straight points by Moore followed by scores from Baker and Sparks.  Free throws by Jackson for the Lady Bulldogs were the only scores the remainder of the half. A buzzer beating three by Sparks finalized the half with the Lady Falcons up 27-19.

The shooting drought for the Lady Bulldogs in the third quarter continued as once again the only points that they could find were free throws.   Gibsland-Coleman did not score for the final four minutes of the third quarter.  Northwood took advantage once again with a three by Moore and a 10-0 run to take a commanding lead 44-23 into the final frame.    Gibsland-Coleman had just run out of gas after their third grueling game of the day.

Ke’Honesty Williams and Jamaya Jackson took honors of being on the All Tournament team.

“I’m real proud of these girls in this tournament,” Gibsland Coach Andrew Haulce said. “I have a team with no seniors. I’ve got one junior, two sophomores and the rest are 7th and 8th graders. I think we did pretty good making it to the championship game, especially since we played three hard games and both of them this morning went down to the wire. I think the future is bright.”

GIRLS CONSOLATION FINALS

DOYLINE LADY PANTHERS 44, CALVARY LADY CAVALIERS 34

The Lady Panther also faced a marathon of games all starting at 9:30 that morning and culminating in their third matchup just six hours later with the Lady Cavs.   Back to back layups by Alex Parker gave the Lady Panthers concern about how this matchup would turn.   A three by Emori Leonard brought Doyline back into the matchup.  The Lady Cavs and Lady Panthers traded shots the remainder of the first quarter to close out Doyline up 11-10.

Neither team could get traction in the second quarter as shots would not fall for either team.  Doyline finally found their shot as Ummika Miller and Tadea Rabb made shots with a 6-0 run and took a 21-13 lead into halftime.

Miller constant drive to the goal drew foul after foul.  Parker fouled out with a little over four minutes remaining in the third quarter.  Another three saw the Lady Panthers grow their lead to 38-22.   The Lady Panthers closed out the third quarter 40-26.

Fatigue seemed to start in for the Lady Panthers as Miller score the only field goal of the fourth quarter.  Avery Covington defense and steals brought Calvary back but not enough as the Lady Panthers took home the 3rd place trophy.

Ummika Miller finished with 13 points for the Lady Panthers.  Emori Leonard bucketed three from beyond the arch to finish with 10 points.

Avery Covington led the Lady Cavaliers with 17 points.

Miller and Covington each were announced on the tournament team.

“I’m proud of the fact that we stayed positive,” Doyline Coach Mike Normand said. “We’re growing as a team.  We still have some growing to do.  We’re going to get there.  I think physically we have the ability to beat some people.  We are starting to show a whole lot more smarts on the floor and I think that’s what paying off.”

When asked about the exhaustion of the girls after their third game, Normand  said “They were pretty tired.  If they were as tired as I was, they are wore out and I have another game tonight.”
