The Calvary Cavaliers had one of their most successful seasons come to a close on Thursday and Friday night last week. Northlake Christian accommodated both games for the Cavs and Lady Cavs since both games were against St. Tammany Parish opponents. The Lady Cavs fell 8-0 to Pope St. John Paul on Thursday and the boys lost a tight 2-1 matchup against the host Northlake Christian on Friday.

The Lady Cavs finished the season as district runner-up with a 12-9. The team had outscored the number of goals before Christmas what they had done the previous years. Coach Adam Hester saw in Covington where he needs to guide this team “We saw down in Covington how far we still have to go,” Hester said. “But I couldn’t be more proud of this crew. These girls have become so close over the season, and in the end, that’s what is most important. Our seniors were so important to the team. All five played huge roles, even the two who only played their senior year. We have a strong nucleus returning, but there’s no replacing some of the attributes those five had. I’ll miss them terribly.”

The Cavs suffered a tough loss down in Covington. The lone goal was scored by Abram Murray. For the season, the Cavs were back to back undefeated district champs and finished with a 10-4-2 record. “That playoff loss will stick with us awhile, ” Hester said. “We had every chance to win against one of the best teams in the division. We wouldn’t have been able to compete as closely as we did with Northlake had this been last year or the season before. The progression we’ve made and the personnel we had this season made things come together. We gained some respect down south and carved out an identity. Like with the girls, we have a solid core returning, but how do we replace these six seniors? They all had such an important role and a big influence on the younger players.”

Coach Hester will look back on this season with some evaluation, some emotion, and some closure as he finishes up some clerical and janitorial tasks to end the soccer season. Then he’ll start thinking about scheduling and budgeting for the next season. The season may be over but the players are always in his heart.
