The Calvary Lady Cavalier Powerlifting Team is taking home the LHSAA Division V State Championship from Monroe.   This is the Lady Cavaliers’ first state championship.  Calvary was State runner-up by 1 point to Port Allen in 2019.  Calvary placed seven on the podium including five state champions.  

Emma Grace Lazarus continues a state champion tradition in her family by winning the 97-pound division with a squat of 200, a 95 bench, and 245 deadlift for a total of 540.  Her sister, Allie, won the same division in 2018 and 2019.  Emma Grace Lazarus dominated the division and won by 140 lbs. Emma Grace Lazarus broke the Class 1A deadlift record with her 245 deadlift.

Caitlyn Perser won the 105 division with a 225 squat, 95 bench, and 220 dead for a total of 540.  The difference in the state title was Perser out lifted on the squat 225-210. 

Some excitement swirled around the other three titleholders in Aubrey Mayo, Skylar Odom, and Hannah Guerrero.

Aubrey Mayo finished with the state championship in the 123 division.  She finished second over all Division 1 through 5 in this class.  She also won Outstanding Lifter on Light Platform.  Mayo lifted 300 on squat and lead competitor Olivia Barnes from Holden matched her.  Mayo out lifted Barnes 150-135 on the bench press.  Mayo successfully lifted 315 on the deadlift.  Barnes attempted 335 but was unsuccessful.  Mayo broke the squat, bench, deadlift, and overall state records.  

Skylar Odom has won her second consecutive state championship as she won the 132 division.  Odom won the division overall all Division Division I, II, III, IV, and V.  Odom led in the squat 315-290 over Peyton Muse of Cedar Creek.  Odom reached 145 on her second attempt at the bench but was not successful at 150.  Looking to close the gap.  Muse reached 140 on her bench on the first attempt, but could not get the 150 on her two other attempts.  Odom carried a 30-pound lead into the deadlift.  Odom reached 305 and completed all three attempts.  Muse had reached 305 on her second attempt.  Muse went for the 30-pound jump to 335 but was not able to make a good lift giving Odom her second state title.  Odom is now the state record holder in the squat, bench, deadlift, and overall total.

Hannah Guerrero had to come back in the state championship path to bring home the gold in the 165 class.  Guerrero started taking the division lead with a 300 pound squat.  Tatum Brasher from Cedar Creek was close behind at 295.  Brasher took the lead after the first bench attempt with 155-115.  Both lifters completed all three bench attempts and finished with Brasher winning the bench at 175–130.  Brasher led heading into the deadlift on total weight 470-430.  Brasher completed her first deadlift attempt at 265.  Looking to close the gap, Guerrero’s attempt at 280 was good.  Brasher seeing her lead cut to 25 pounds went for 285 and made good on the attempt.  Guerrero made a 50-pound jump in weight to 330.  Her attempt was successful and took the lead back at 760-755.  Brasher went for the 295 on her last attempt but got the red flag on the lift.  Guerrero attempted 340 but didn’t need it because she had claimed the win. 

Calvary placed two on the podium in the 114 division as Breanne Jones finished second and Pamela Lee finished third. 

Haynesville’s Shontellas Shine gave Holden’s Gabriel Sharp a run for the gold in the SHW division.  Sharp took the early lead with a 330-315 squat over Shine.  Shine stayed in second.  Shine out lifted Sharp on the bench 200-195 and closed the gap to 10 pounds.  Shine started the deadlift with a 275 and got it.  Sharp countered with a 300 to take the 35-pound lead.  Shine jumped 40 pounds to 315 and got the green flag to take the lead for a moment.  Sharp directly after Shine went for 320 and knocked it out having a slight lead heading into the final attempt.  Sharp went for 350 to lock in the title but was could not make the lift.  Shine jumped again to 360 but came up short and became the state runner-up for Haynesville.

Castor’s Anaiah Johnson also made a podium appearance in the SHW division lifting 285 squat, 115 bench, and 270 on the dead lift for a total of 670 and finishing third.
