Vic Morris has done it again along with the Cavaliers as they make a third consecutive appearance in the state semifinals. The format has been different each time since the select divisions have been altering their format from semis and state championships.
Two years ago during the worldwide pandemic. Calvary played one in the first round at home and then the quarterfinals and semifinals on the road. In the semifinals, a buzzer heater pushed Calvary to the finals over Hamilton Christian. With New Orleans being a red hot spot for COVID-19, the championship was a decided neutral site at Lee High School in Baton Rouge. The Cavs fell in the finals to Crescent Coty.
Last year the LHSAA combined the select and non-select championships on McNeese State campus at Burton Coliseum. They experienced what the non-select experienced with the Top 28. The semifinals saw the Cavaliers edge out Riverside Academy 67-63 to make back-to-back appearances in the finals. Crescent City pulled the win again over Calvary.
Calvary makes a third appearance with a 76-58 win over Ascension Catholic last Saturday night. La’Bree Williams nailed 41 points and 11 rebounds. Martin McDowell hit 17 points for the win.
Third-time charm? Very likely. This time the selects will be their focus at the Cajundome in Lafayette. The select Marsh Madness also will be a week earlier than the non-select. The Cavaliers will be facing No. 3 Metairie Park Country Day (20-10). The Cajuns come into the semi-finals winning 13 of their last 15. The Cavaliers are no slouches coming into the semifinals winning 15 straight wins. The other side of the bracket will feature No. 1 Southern Lab (27-4) and No. 4 Hamilton Christian (21-8). Calvary had an early season win over Hamilton Christian but has not played Southern Lab this season.
Calvary and Metairie Park Country Day will be played on Wednesday, March 2 at 4:00 pm in Lafayette at the Cajundome.
